Question Larger litre swap or turbo addition? What's cheaper?

Okay.. I have the 1.8L POS under the hood. No hood scoops or vents, just plain hood and the pre MY97 headlights and grille.

Now, what would be cheaper? To buy the turbo setup and go front mount or use the TMIC and buy a new hood (and the lights and grille to fit it)...

OR

Should I just go through the wiring pains and uprgrade to a 2.5RS block and tranny? What's cheaper??

If you can find a color matched hood for your body the hood goes for around $200-$300. The headlights cost another $200 and the grill about $140. total for facelift is about $540-700. (this is excluding paint job)

a turbo kit from a loyale or legacy would go for about $300 up. so it's about $1000+ to begin with.

You might be able to go for a Air to Water TMIC which is much cheaper than a facelift. this about $250 can do. so it'll bring the price back down to $500+

a decent EJ25 goes for $1200-up. so it really depends on what you want.

this is of course not taking into account reliability and turbo lag (which the almost similar powered EJ25).

EDIT: I don't think you'll need to change the wirings for the EJ25 block, from all that i've read. it's just plug and play. same goes for the tranny. u can use your stock if you aren't planning to go crazy about boost or dumping your clutch.

Your call.

The headlights off an RS would be $200! I was looking to do a facelift on my car too. I'm interested in getting the lights and the front bumper more than the hood. Would the lights fit without the hood and the grill and everything?

i think the hood, grill and headlights must go together.

but you can just put in a new bumper skin and a new bumper re-bar to get the new look.

Your looking at some big money if you get parts through a dealer.

Hey Keith,

Long time no talk...her's my take on this since we had the exact same car. Whether to turbo or not.

First off, our engines are more tired...mine having 119K. I know your up there too. I wouldn't want to put my engine to that abuse.

Secondly, if I were to turbo it without serious work, running it about 5-7 psi, I'd think it would have as much power as an RS. I felt that if I were to turbo my car, I wanted more power. But, that's me.

Thirdly, a decent turbo kit is gonna run you at least $2K, depending on what you want in it and all the accessories. Maybe more, that's just being conservative. I know Rallispec quoted me about $5-6K.

So, right now based on those three reasons, I am more biased to do a 2.5 engine swap. There was a guy up in Maine that had a 2.5 engine with ECU for about $1200. Now, you would still need a tranny, but think about, you're gonna have a much newer car(engine wise).

If you want to talk about this more, email me.

-Pete

PM'd you. Yeah, I figure the EJ25 would be better. I just want more power and I think the 2.5 has what I want. Better is the fact that I don't have to buy a new hood and lights and stuff (i already have the newer bumper and fogs). Yet, I KNOW it's not plug and play.. How bad do you think the wiring would be??

Well, the thing is that this guy has the ECU. I don't know enough to say whether it is plug and play or not, but you can ask him. He may not know either, so you may want to start a new thread. BTW, I sent you a PM with all the details. Let me know how it works out.

yea i will also like to know if the other engines are just drop-ins.

Scoobyslack did his swap and according to him everything other than the egine is stock from the 1.8 L.

Sounds pretty easy, but will like to find out more before attempting it myself.

Thumbs up

I might be joining this group. I will be getting my hands on a MY93-95 this summer and I figure that it would be easier and cheaper and more rewarding to replace the engine rather than tuning that poopy 1.8L. I just don't know what kind of funding I will have after I modify the exterior. I wouldn't mind hearing what kind of results you guys get or what you know so far. Good luck!

Question

Hold the phone, does that $1200 for the EJ25 include the transmission? If so, that would make my car hunt so much easier. Does the engine type also determine whether or not it is AWD? Basically, I'm wondering if I bought an auto, FWD, Impreza L; would/could dropping a EJ25 in turn it into a manual, AWD, Impreza 2.5L? Hmmmm...

i doubt you'll get a tranny with a decent EJ25 for $1200. Most bare engines only start at that kind of prices. Unless you've got a real good hook-up.

Pete,
Let me know if John doesn't sell the block. I'm really interested now.

Now only if my fed refund check would arrive...
