Default Baja MASTER PLAN?

Could this be what Subaru has in mind for the Baja ultimately?

Baja Sport built off the Legacy/Outback platform, as it is now, but with the addition of a turbo and sans leather.

Baja built off the up-coming, and larger 7-passenger crossover.

Think about it for a moment. Subaru already uses this type of marketing for the the small Impreza-based Outback Sport and the larger Legacy-based Outback.

If Subaru were to offer two Bajas, one small & sporty, and the other larger and more capable, it would (IMO) solve a lot of existing problems. No longer would the smaller Baja take all the heat it's gotten for being almost useless in terms of being a truck, and would allow it to focus on being a fun trucklet, because the larger Baja would serve the needs of those in need of greater capability.

I think this type of gameplan has lots of possibilities.

Bob

I have heard people say it before but I'll say it again...Subaru should hire you. Every time I check out this site you have some crazy idea or insight. Keep it up. BTW - you must have a lot of free time on your hands.

Ya know, as far fetched as it sounds to some, it is entirely possiable that this is the case, one never knows!

I really don't think it's that far fetched an idea. Subaru already use this same formula with the Outback Sport and Outback. The OBS is built on the smaller Impreza chassis, and is marketed as, well... a "Sport." Subaru could do the same with the Baja, except this time the "small" version would be built off the Outback platform (as it currently is), and the "large" version would be built off the larger (I'm assuming!) yet-to-be-shown 7-passenger crossover.

This "duo" could be the answer: A smaller sporty model would continue for those who like that size, and a larger, more work-capable model would be there for those who need/want that kind of vehicle.

Not that I think what you're saying is a bad idea, but I think you're just pointing out the fundamental "problem" with the Baja. If people still have it in their heads that the Baja is attempting to be a truck, Subaru is not doing their marketing correctly. To me, it is clearly not a truck (just as the original Brat was not a truck) and so all these gripes about not enough power, towing capacity, etc. are just meaningless. It's a car with the utility of having an uncovered bed.

If you need big towing capacity and the ability to carry full 4X8 sheets of plywood, then by all means buy a truck.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the car - I think it's purely a marketing issue. They need to more concisely state what the Baja represents to buyers, and give them the option of getting cheaper stripped down version (which they're doing).

(I will end this rant with my obligatory "I'm thinking about trading in my WRX for a Baja" statement)
