Default New STI uses side feed injectors..

Not sure if many of you have had a close look at the engine in the new STI, but it uses the older style side feed injectors. I got a chance to dive under the hood at a Subaru Preview event before the Portland Auto show, and took a look around.

The fuel rails are similar to the WRX, with the exception that they are for the side feed injectors. The injectors are bright yellow, not pink as well.

Good news is that it looks like that fuel rail would bolt into our car... also, the fuel pressure regulator looks to be under the manifold, and perhaps it is a dual feed rail, not a single path... couldn't really tell without pulling some tools out.

Otherwise, the engine looked like a 2.5 block with AVCS heads. The heads looked identical from the outside to the STI AVCS heads I have, including the casting marks that I could see. The plastic covers prevents more detailed anaylsis. I would guess the cams would be different. The downpipe looked just like the stock WRX, with the cat in the same place..

It was hard to see the uppipe clearly, but it appear to NOT have the EGT sensor. Difficult to tell if it had a cat, as the STI JDM one looks similar and has no cat.

Throttle body was completly differnent, giving to the electronic throttle control. Interesting to say the least. Rear diff was the R180 Suretrac.

What are the essential/functional differences between the side and top injector rails?

Great post, very helpful - but so what? If the injectors/rails flow as well or better than those in the 2.0 we will be happy. Sometimes the side or angled injectors are better at keeping the fuel cooler since the air space around them is greater than the top mount style, it just depends on the packaging of things.

Nice one on the injectors that confirms what damianq in Canada has said.
He has the best inside info on the STI I have found. I had to trick him alittle to get it.

Please read thru this post as alot of info to be had. Best stuff is at the bottom of page 1


BTW did you get the APS article I sent you regarding pistons 2 and 4 having cooling problems on the EJ20.
