I've had a custom 3" system on my car for about 6-8 months now and it's just too loud for me lately. Anybody have any idea's on what 3" muffler out there is the least noticeable?

have you heard a dynomax muffler? no sound clips for Subaru's but you'll get the gist of it. http://www.dynomax.com/sounds.stm

I've heard that the Tanabe Hyper Medallion is relatively quiet.

Aaron, can't answer your Q, but go here if you haven't seen it yet and you may find something you like. http://chrislehr.com/garage/WRX/sounds/
BTW: i was running a HKS catless DP w/my stock rear section and it was very quiet, just a bit more "raspy" sounding over the stock turbo back |

Here's another link
If you're just going to cut the old muffler off I'd go with the #17223 Ultra Flo Wedded round design wityh 3" in and out. If you like the oval design you could go with #17221 for a single tip If you like the looks of the Ultra Flo SS It's going to be only the round #17267(race) or #17296(sport). -Leland |

Man you guys reply fast!
I have a Godspeed DP with the stock muffler and it's very quiet. I little more "raspy" like KJR described, but I'd be hard pressed to remember the difference between stock now. BTW there is a Ultra Flo Welded oval design that may work for a "sleeper" effect it's #17228 The only thing is that it's a center inlet, but it may be workable.-Leland |

I've got the Perrin Catless downpipe and Perrin Up-pipe in my car with the stock catback right now. I think it sounds very similar to stock but you hear the turbo a lot more (in the car at least). The MRT exhaust is supposed to be reasonably quiet too. I know that Vishnu's turboback is quiet so I assume that their new cat back will be as well. Although the Vishnu system I heard has a single high flow cat in it so I'd imagine that it will sound a bit different catless. Before I stopped looking at Catbacks I was leaning towards the Brullen one and unless something else comes out or something major persuades me not too I'll probably get this one eventually. I think the stock is just too much of a restriction on there.

That is exactly what I am after. I have the Helix DP on the stock midpipe and axle back (very quiet, but leaks at the flange) so I asked about and some said the Apex-i World Sport was quiet and stealth. Ok, so I ordered it and it is due to arrive any day. I am hoping its on my door step tonight.
But after listening to the MP3 of the catback I am now concerned it may be too loud. Yikes! Maybe I just had the speaker volume to high? I am 46 y/o with a family and the WRX is my daily driver. I don't like the flash (bling bling) stuff. Stealth with performance is what I crave. I'll keep you posted. Greg Downing |

Only problem I see is that if your getting leaks with the stock axle back, you might have the same problem with the World Sport since it uses the same flange style at the downpipe connection as the stock exaust. -Anthony Festino |

as for quiet, try a dynomax superturbo muffler. not straight through, but no 3" straight through muffler is quiet.
edit: it only flows 410scfm, which equals to about 186 hp optimal capability. so, if highly modified, it is not optimal... however, its more optimal than a stock muffler. for comparison the UltraFlo SS, flows enough to support 450 hp. Last edited by SonicYellowWRX; 02-04-2003 at 08:07 PM. |

I had a dyno max superturbo muffler and I would rate it a slightly louder than stock and much quiter than the magnaflow that comes with the tuboxs turbo back. It also does not attract as much attention due to its size. I plan on putting it back on when its emmissions time.

Well I installed the Apex-i World Sport just now. I am disappointed. I was told it was a true 3" catback with a 2.5" reducer at the DP flange. I figured I could visit a muffler shop and get a 3" replacement for the 2.5" section. Well the A-WS is 2.5" from the DP all the way back to about 18" till the muffler canister.
AND it still leaks at the flange (Ok, I can have that fixed) BUT, I wanted a 3" all the way back like the COBB unit. GDIATH! Why can't someone tell the truth about the product??? Also I have a trailer hitch on my wagon and guess what. The tip does not clear the hitch at all. It is tight and pressed up against the hitch and hanging at an angle due to the hanger orientation. Ok, so maybe I can get that fixed too. But why cannot I buy a WRX product that works as advertized??? The Helix DP has issues too and bangs up against the tranny cradle in reverse. OK, I can pull it off and hit it with a hammer to make a dent in that area but I have already notched the cradle with a dremel trying to make room. GDIATH, The only thing I can tell you good about the Apex-i World Sport is it is quiet, but the tip is too big for me and the SS canister I hate. I am going to ponder this for a while but I suspect its going to be FS soon. I am pi**ed as H*LL! Greg Downing |
