Default Heater only works on 4(high)

I recently noticed that my heater is kind of broken. I only really use it to defrost the windows. The last couple of days I defrosted the car using the heater on 4. As I drove to work, I would turn the heater down to 2, and the windows would begin to fog up again. If I move the switch to 4 I can actually feel the air flow and the windows clear.

There is very little or NO air flow on any other setting by 4. Does anyone know a set of tests, or things I can look at to try and fix this. I know I could take it to the dealer for a fix, but since I removed my AC, I think they would try and charge me for the repair.

Any help?

J

Likely an open circuit in the resistor pack. With switch in "4", the resistors are bypassed and the blower still works.

Simple fix, the A/C Fan Relay has gone bad. It's somewhat common. The relay costs about $35 from the dealer, it's located behind the glovebox. Replace it and all 4 fan settings will work again!

Opie,

You say it is the AC fan relay. Would removing the underhood portion of my AC system have any effect on this? I have not touched anything under the dash, but I did remove the compressor, condensor and all of the underhood lines.

Is there anyway to test the AC fan relay? I assume it is like a normal relay and I can supply voltage to one pin and it will switch it to somewhere else.

Anyone have details testing instructions for this?

Thanks

J

Hmmm, removing parts under the hood shouldn't have affected it. I doubt you could've caused a surge or voltage spike that might of damaged it.

I had the relay go out twice on the '95 Impreza I used to have. Same symptom, fan would work only on the highest setting (4). Part number for all '93-'01 Impreza's is 72024AA000. I don't know if there is any way to test it...maybe you could take yours out and test it in a friends Impreza and vice-versa.
