Off-road capable? THAT THING? The Jeep Liberty is the SUV that Autoweek rolled in a slalom test at 40mph.

What does a slalom test have to do with off-road capability?

When you roll a car at that speed... it says (at least to me) that it's not exactly the most stable thing in the world. That's not a vehicle I would want to take down any trail without a real off-road vehicle to tow it back out.

To be good off road, a vehicle has to have a high ground clearance which raises the center of gravity. This is the exact thing that makes it unstable in an on road test like a slalom.

it rolled because the suspension has way too much travel and the suspension didn't stop the car from rolling while the wheels were in fact still on the ground you don't go 40mph when you do any sereous offroad 5-10 is the fastest you'll be going... unless you're doin some gravel stuff, i enjoy that... mmmmm

It might be better than most current SUVs at off-roading but that isn't saying much. I think most real jeep people would rather have a Cherokee than a Liberty. Solid front axle for one thing. Speaking of which I can't believe Chevy is supposedly putting IRS on the next gen pickups

I thought the same thing, but it was in the latest Car and Driver (or maybe Road and Track but I don't think so). First independent front suspension on the heavy duty trucks, now independent rear suspension. Yuck.

I beleive that Jeep lowered the Liberty a couple of inches and put in stiffer springs for the 02' or '03 models to make them less tippy.

now its got the ground clearance of a civic. WOW!

Either way, I think my Scooooooooooob is more off-road capable than that.

scoobs are very underrated in offroadness, especially if you don't worry abotu scraping up your front bumper you can go most anywhere
