Angry Hella lights round 2

Ok. Well. Most of you know I replaced my stock fogs in my MY00 RS after I ended up with a crack in one of them.
I got the 500 hella fog series from Dave @ rallylights.com.

Now mind you, I went 50K miles without ONE crack.

So I replace them, and even buy the hella clear covers to protect them.
Not even one week later, passenger side is cracked.
One week after that, the drivers side cracks.

So, I phone Dave up, and he promptly ships me out replacements. (excellent business I may add)

Installed them about 2 weeks ago.

Just went outside to install my clear corners, and the damn drivers side one is cracked. W T F?!?!!?

The last time this happened Jamie (aka Subiegal) and a host of others suggested I use Stonegard type thick plastic coverings.

So I promptly ordered them from Jamie, and put them on my new ones before installation.

So what do I do now? 50K miles and ONE crack.
2K miles and THREE cracks.

This is AMAZING. I thought Hella's were supposed to be made of tempered glass??????

What should I do guys?

Cheers

Will

how often do you use the lights?
i'd just say get better headlight bulbs and put STi style covers over the fog holes.

I use the fogs ALL the time.
So that is not a viable option for me.

Anyone else?

Cheers

What kind of bulbs are you running? Are they stone-chip cracks or heat-stress cracks?

Do the Austrialian fog covers fit the hellas?

Horation, It seems to be heat stress cracks.

But I have no way of telling really. I have no pit marks in the stonegard stuff, so my guess is it was heat. I only turn them on at night or rain, fog. And turn them off when I don't need them, or are sitting still, (i.e when my call is warming up in the morning)

So, I don't get it. Jamie said there was no issue with heat with stonegard stuff. So, I have NO idea what to do now.

Cheers

What wattage bulbs are you using? I actually cracked the plastic cases on my last set of 500s from hitting a snowbank. The glass was fine. So I know the glass is strong.

They are the stock 55w bulbs.

Nothing different about them. And I used the stock FOG adapters.

So I'm not pushing out anything more than stock. I am REALLY not happy. But don't want to call Dave again really unless you all think thats best.

The main reason I bought these were for their quality and craftsmanship. So for, I have seen neither from these lights.

I am EXTREMELY peeved ATM.

Cheers

Wicked. I ran 100w H3s in my stock fogs with no real problem (blue/gold center reflectors != problem to me), except they got too hot and burned out fast.

Don't know what to tell you. Do you screw the lenses to the body like on the 4000s? I only ask because perhaps they're getting screwed on too tight?

You sir have a perplexing problem.

Mister Jaxx,

This problem is OBVIOUSLY not related to tailgating.
There is nothing wrong with the clear lenses, those would have cracked first. Yet my last set cracked.

So.

And Mr. Jaxx, learn how to spell. It's q-u-i-t. Quit, as in desist. Quite a poor use of the language. And you might quit assuming he's tailgating. Rocks can come from oncoming traffic. Although his cracks don't seem to be coming from flying objects. Hope you figure this out...

You bought the wrong ones then. The 500's are very cheap lights for Hella, heck you can buy them at Pep Boys. I buy them because they're cheap, bright and easily replaced. 15k miles on my WRX DL set, no issues, 70k+ miles on my Audi set, one stone chip.

Snowphun,

Do you use any kind of protection on them? like stonegards or clear covers?

Cheers

Nothing on any of them, though it's relevant that the Audi set is mounted above the bumper, probably a foot higher than the set in my WRX. I figure they're cheap enough to replace when one cracks badly I'll swap it out, plue the protection films can really speed up the heat issues. I do run Stongard on my stock headlights.

Look into the 4000 and some of the other higher end Hella (along with PIAA) for a better quality light.

I just noticed a hole in my driver's side fog light today. And I've got a pretty good idea of where it came from. Stupid dmp truck running down the freeway in the left lane with the tailgate open (so another bucket could slide in off a trailer for double capacity in tight spots, don't know if you've seen what I'm talking about) anyway he was spewing gravel all over the place.

I'v been running the hella 1000ff in my stock spots for 7000+ miles with 100 watt bulbs no prob, stock is 55 for these lights. I know they've been hit by stones a few times by the little white marks that get left on then. But no real chips and no cracks. I'v been real happy with hella. How are you mounting them?

Hrm. I've had my Hellas in since August about. I don't think I have had any cracks. Maybe your stonguards are acting as insulators and heating up the glass too much?

*runs out to check his fogs for cracks*

Well, both of these incidents lend to heating problems.

This is the ONLY thing I can think of.

I will be removing the stonegard tonight. Hopefully I will be able to get a replacement lense from Dave.

The stonegards came with a note that they will not cause cracking due to heat issues, so......

Cheers

Will,
A friend of mine in NE had the same problem with his Hellas on an RS. He stopped using the clear covers, but I think a set even cracked without the covers.

His name is kpratte.

I haven't had any issues with the ones on my WRX yet, but they haven't been on long.
