Question Help me build a circuit that will make an LED flash

I have no idea why this is so difficult. I was pretty sure that all I needed was a capacitor, an LED, resistor, and battery to make this work, but I'm having no luck. So can someone tell me what's wrong with my circuit or tell me how to make a circuit for this. All I want is a single LED to flash. Nothing spectacular, just a flashing LED. As is, the LED gets constant power and the cap doesn't seem to be doing anything.

Wow, a power MOSFET just to flash one little LED
I believe that Radio Shack sells self-contained flashing LEDs, at least I remember they used to.

I'm assuming you have the battery in parallel with the capacitor and LED. the cap isn't doing anything because it's in a steady state. a capacitor in a DC circuit acts as an open circuit. this is because once enough charge is build across the capacitor plates, it can't gather any more because all the charge that is already at the plate will repel any more current.

they should sell pre-packaged units that do this though. probably have some sort of relay, that woudl be more cost-effective over a transistor

Radio Shack has 4 different flashing LED's where all you need to do is to hook them to power. At $1.29 to $1.79 why not just use one of theirs??
