Default Power for the Auto dimming mirror?

How does the auto dimming mirror get its power? I assumed that it was plugged into something underneath the roof liner. I was wondering if i could splice the wires of my radar detector into that so that i can use my cigarette lighter for the charger for my phone. Any ideas if this could work? thanks

Alex

there is contant power running to the dome light and map
lights. mine came with the mirror already installed so not
sure...does it require a 12v switched and just a ground?

if so yes, you can eithe tap it to your cigarette
lighter wires or do it the right way and take off the front
part of your ceiling liner. its very easy to do.

All it takes is 12 v and ground so i should be good to go. I just wanted to make sure there was wiring up there for me to get to before i started taking apart me headliner. Thanks for the input.

Yes, you can tie into the mirror harness if you like. That's how I wired my radar detector in and it only comes on when the key is in the ACC or RUN positions. Constant power is not what you want since you'll have to remember to turn off the detector everytime you leave the car. You can get to the wiring by first carefully removing the lens from the maplight housing. You'll see a couple of screws holding the housing in place once you get the lens out of the way. Once you have the housing loose (you can let it hang by the wire) you'll be able to reach in and find the mirror harness. The plug on it is about 3/4" square. Use a test light to see which wire is hot. Hope that helps.
