Cool STI Arrival Update (2-11-03)

Here's the story. I called my local Subaru dealer a few months back and told him to put me on the "I want an STI" list, and to let me know when they had more information. I bought a 2002 WRB WRX from them back in April of last year, and they treated me fairly. I have not yet put a deposit down, nor signed any contract.

Well, I got the call today. The dealer said he had just gotten off the phone with SOA, and this was the information he was instructed to give potential customers:

SOA is only taking pre-orders for the STI. None will be delivered to be sold on dealer lots.
Delivery is in August.
MSRP will fall between $32-$33k (the dream of $28-$29k is now dead).
Car will be pre-ordered with color only, no options. SOA will contact customers directly for option specifications at a later date for their car (this seemed kind of strange to me, but also quite a personal way to get the car optioned out exactly as you want). Time will tell if this is true.
There are already approximately 139 confirmed pre-orders in the U.S. The number of orders is rapidly growing. (duh)
He had no information on total production run quantities.

This is what I was told today. Comments?

139.... really.... this means your dealer is low balling or lots of people in the forums are telling lies....hmmm. That would be a good poll that you could only vote on once "Place a one by your name in the reply section if you actually have a deposit down on an STI." Then it will just take the magic of a marketing wizard to tell us how many are telling the truth.

Translation: Your dealer just got off the phone with the SOA Southeast regional rep and the Southeast region has tabulated, approximately, 139 STi orders.

Default i can kinda back-up jkblac's story

I called the local dealer to see if an STi will be at the Pittsburgh auto show next week. He said "no". But we started talking about the STi and he stated several times that this will be an "order only" car. You will not be able to go to a dealer and test drive. I thought it was a bunch of dealer BS until I read this thread. It still could be...but with two of us hearing this...it may be true.

He had no info on price or release date.

The dealer also said that their order list currently stands at 4. He wanted $500 non-refundable deposit.

Saw the SE rep last week... at that time he estimated around 120 pre-orders in the SE so the 139 for SE now might be right.

a guy at one of the dealerships near me put my on his STi list...

he said his location has 20 confirmed buyers with guaranteed STIs.. and there will be another 30 STIs coming into his place from june-july.. a 2 month span

so at least 50 total by fall... from the looks of it, theyve already got like 30 -2003 WRXs on the lot. (their website inventory shows 60!)

but what do dealers know huh? at any rate he basically told me i could be in an STi by Augest/September NO PROBLEM -

How do you take pre-orders... if the MSRP hasn't been
announced yet????

Could they do that??

Brahmzy: I definitly agree... Until we see official pricing/delivery date, almost everything is speculation, especially from the usual dealer BS as arrival date and pricing to push some more sales!

I may be wrong but it's only my .2 cents

There are over 40 at van bortel. I'd imagine Mastro and Irvine are running similar numbers.

I think that Subaru would be unwise to not have the car available for test drives at at least some dealers. It's not a Ferrari that people are paying half a million bucks for. It's a car that many want to see before they buy, for good reason. If they want to sell race cars, fine, but if they want to move a few of these after this year, they should make them available for test drives.

Surprisingly I was only #14 IIRC at Mastro less than 2 weeks ago.

Bragging rights: wife says that if this is the car I really want then I should go for it because I deserve it! What a woman!

Default my dealer sticks to...

him having 3-4 cars available late May/early June. When he took my $1000 refundable deposit he filled out a purchase order as much as he could and he stated he could not complete it until MSRP had been announced. He wrote down "confirmed order" and silver as my color of choice.

I'm #2 on the list.

Waiting 'till August sure would pump up EVO sales?

Angry

Freekin' Dealers!!!

I don't buy for one second nor will I ever buy a car that is not available to test drive let alone see in person before I lay down $$...whether it's a deposit or a purchase.

Tell your dealer(s) that you're not buying jack from him until you see an actual MSRP AND have been able to drive it.

It's all speculation until the car actually starts showing up in lots.

I do believe the limited production rumors, although again time will tell just how many the U.S. and certain dealers receive.

What a load of B.S. "Yeah I've got a lunar module for sale, although we don't have it yet, don't know how much it will cost and if you want one you have to give me money and we'll show it to you once you've signed this tiny little piece of paper ensuring us that you will pay for the whole thing, whatever it is that we are selling!"

Jesus! It could be a big wheel...would you like handlebar tassles with that pre-order?

Peace,
Oquipah (patiently? waiting for a solid truthful answer)

oquipah -

I know it's frustrating, but there are tons of people who are putting deposits down on this car sight unseen. If you would like to be one of the first buyers, you pretty much have to trust subaru.

If you wait for MSRP, you will almost certainly miss out on the first delivery. If you wait for them to have a lot car sitting around for test drives, that could be a long time for most dealers.

Default this always happens right?

With any limited production 'hot' car?

There are many examples of this in the past few years. (excluding highline marque cars)

If you wait for a test drive I'll bet you'll miss out on getting one.

Just my $.02

Thumbs down

I understand, I guess I won't be the first on the block to have one. I was hoping to get one, you know just to impress the chics, but alas I guess I'll just wait, save money, see if I like the car and see how much doo-dy the dealers are flingin' this time around.

I guess it depends on just how important it is for people to own a car they've "heard" about. I trust SOA...I don't trust dealers.

Can I be put on the list for riding with someone who was on the list for an STi and ended up getting one?

Peace,
Oquipah

August is a bunch of whoee... I don't think ANY dealer ANYWHERE knows what they are talking about. I would believe the pricetag, but I even have speculation of it being lower. Only time will tell!

I would bet that price tag is right. Further, "orders only" weeds out the wankers. Do you want the car or not? There won't be any weekend test drivers/tire kickers beating on a car that the dealer then has to try to turn around as a demo. You want one, you pay up. You can drive your car when it shows up, and there will be options then to back out of the deal, leaving the dealer the option of moving on to the next person on the list.

The "orders only" also allows Subaru to sell exactly as many STis as they make. With a car such as that one, having them sitting around on dealer lots unsold (and marked down for quick sale) would be bad P.R.

It all makes sense to me. Hell, I'd even buy the seemingly low numbers of confirmed orders. There are a lot more people talking about getting one, than putting money where their mouths are, I rather imagine.

This also makes the most sense to me. My dealer had a list of 20+ before the accouncement. When it was time to put down a deposit, the 'list' dropped to one person in front of me. (I wasn't even on the old list)

I'll see your $.02, and raise you my $.02.

The language I've heard is that this is a limited release car, not limited production. That indicates that they will only be having a few out at a time instead of flooding the dealers. Good to make folks believe stuff like what dealers say about not having one on the lot. The dealer that I've spoken to told me (this is as worthless as what everyone else has heard from dealers, but we need balance here) that they should have some on the floor by December or so. Might one have to wait? Sure, but it's worth it. Let the very first run get out and see how the engines do in the first six months or so. By then, maybe you'll find one on a dealer floor somewhere to test drive. Hell, I'm thinking about waiting until next year. Makes sense to let the bugs get worked out.

Again, though, this kind of discussion is purely for our own amusement, as it is totally meaningless to restate what dealers say they heard. Remember, their job is to sell you cars. Don't think that any of them are not biased or are not sales people.
