If you are running Paradas and 18" wheels that narrow, looks are definitely the only thing on your list. Paradas are not known for their performance and 18" wheels will do little more than add weight to the car (unless you are planning on installing some 380mm brake rotors).
And yes, the question of wheel sizing is rather popular. The reason there is no solid answer is probably a combination of factors: not many people running 18s, very few tires to be had in 215 width for 18s, very few people with a lot of experience bother with wheels larger than they actually need. I think the 18" are more for looks than anything. They usually weigh more (depending on tire selection). I like 17" myself. They are a lot more forgiving when the roads aren't smooth with the larger sidewalls.

I got P1 18" on my car..
I bought those wheel for the street.. For racing, I use other wheel.. I was looking for a wheel that not many people was having, because I hate to have something that a lot of people have .. So, I went with 18" P1 in Gold.. The weight.. My Mags and tires 225/35 weight the same thing that the guys with is 17" 215/40.. Some people have post 40 lbs for 17" with tires.. I weight mine to 41 lbs. I did want to have 225 without any rubbing and got some nice wheels.. I will not been going 225 if I was not turbo, but I am.. so, I dont really loose some time with the wider tire.. After installing my 18", I done some race, and I still kick a lot of ass on the road.. And I am glad now that I choose 18", because the brake kit that I just found and that I want, its 355mm disk (14") and requiered 18" mags.. For sure that the Road condition are sometime rought with the 18", but, even my g/f did not seem to really find any diff in the confort ride between my 16" and 18".. Its still really smooth.. Its not like Civic that have to ride 18" with 205/35.. thats damm low.. My tire are still low, but its not that bad.. a lot of people think that they are 17" mags because of the size of the tires.. The tires that I am running right now, are Pirelli P-Zero 225/35 The mags weight is important, but the tire weight often more the the mags itself.. Thats my 2 cents, and everyone got is own opinion on 18" and 17" Later Mike M My world of cars http://pages.infinit.net/subarurs/ |

I have 18" P1 with 215/40 Paradas. I will be the first one to admit that looks is a big factor in the choice. When I'm spending $2K on wheels/tires, I sure want them to look good, not just now, but still in a few years. The trend has been going towards larger and larger wheels, and I hope the 18" will still look good in a few years.
Tire choice is definitely a minus. Not much choice for 215/40, but Paradas is a good balance between price and performace for me. Otherwise, 225/35 or 225/40 are the way to go. Finally, I have to say that the ride with stock suspension is actually not bad at all on most roads. Not much worse than the Integra GSR of my ex-gfs, or the IS 300 with 17" wheels I test drove. And turn-in is really sharp with the 40-series tires. |
