Default Daily Driver?

Im just wondering how many of you that are planning on getting a 2004 STi, are going to use it as a daily driver? I live in Wisconsin so im wondering about the winters, what precautions one can take to protect the car during the snow season.

I have used a WRX as a daily driver for around 60,000 miles (46,000+ on an '02 and 13,000+ on an '03). These cars are perfect if you are an enthusiast with one car. I am sure that the STI will be in the same category. There is one thing on the STI though, that without a doubt, you will have to change for the winter: THE TIRES. I live in Philadelphia where we get a good amount of snow (a foot on the ground right now). I drove my '02 with 17" performance rubber in the snow once, and your AWD is ABSOLUTELY worthless without proper tires. The STI comes with performance-summer tires. While these are great in the rain, you will need winter-tires. Right now I have 17" Bridgestone RE950s. They are a good all-season performance tire. I can get around in the snow, but this is not an optimal set-up. You will need to either change your tires for the winter, or buy a spare set of wheels and tires. The second choice may be expensive though because 16's won't fit over the brakes, it seems there aren't too many 17" wheels that can clear the Brembo Calipers on the car, and 17" snow tires aren't cheap. Other than that, I don't think you can go wrong with an STI.

Just as my current 02 WRX is a daily driver, my new STi will be a daily driver. 20 miles each way to work and home.

my STi will not be a daily driver. I will be keeping my MY00 RS as a daily driver (and will be keeping an eye out for wrecked STis, turbo foresters, turbo legacys and turbo bajas at the junkyard :P).

That's the reason I'm getting it. I need a daily driver/beater. I also agree that I will need at least a new set of wheels with all-season tires, though.

It'll be my only car, so it will have to be a daily driver. Besides, that is what it was made for.

If I got one, the STI would be the daily driver and my L that I have now would be the weekend driver/track car

In the long run, its definitely worth getting a 2nd set of wheels and tires for the winter. You'll save $$ by switching out the wheels yourself, and you'll save those expensive stock rims from getting damaged by careless mechanics. That said, nothing beats studded tires on ice and snow, if they are legal in your area and you get enough snow to justify them, then they are definitely worth it.

my sti will be used strictly for the weekends during the spring-fall months. it will stay garaged on rainy days and especially in the winter since i live in ny state. i'm guessing i'll put 2000-3000 miles on it a year. so basically she'll be used as a pleasure only ride.

Understatement... the tires that come with the car are some real track tires. You might want to get a set for the street and 17" + snows are not going to be cheep or easy to find.

Talking all day every day

It will see the weekday commute (windy country road). It will see the weekend twisties. It will see the occasional track. Mine will see 12-15k/year. The first couple of thousand miles will be very tough on me.

This will sound funny, but my WRX doesn't get used during the week or during the winters. It gets stored. I use a Subaru wagon as my daily driver and my winter car. Plan on doing the same with the Sti. I throw in my motorcycle a few days a week during the summer too, all to keep the miles down and the WRX and soon to be Sti.

While I can half respect the people who baby, pamper and store their cars (not driven in rain, snow, etc.) in the end a car is made to be used... If I pay allot of money for a car, I want maximum enjoyment out of that car now, rather than worrying about extending it's life. Just another perspective.

I use my WRX as a daily driver for my 110+ mile commute. I'll be doing the same with the Sti whenever I can get one (probably a year next spring). I've logged on almost 35k trouble free miles since April.

Yeah, it'll be the dailymobile. It's a Subaru Impreza, not a Ferrari.

Besides, its entertainment value is function, not beauty. I won't get my money's worth by just looking at it.

Again, I'll have the pleasure of driving it every day. At that kind of mileage once you add depreciation, gas, insurance, and maintanance (what little there would be) the cost per mile could easily be around $2. At a speed of 50 mph your new Sti costs something like $100 an hour to drive. You can rent a small plane for less. I say if you're going to buy one at least get you $$$ worth. Just my 2 cents.

It'll be a daily driver for me. Heh, keeping a 300hp beast in the garage while I commute with my Accord is just unbearable. At least the invigorating sound of the STi engine will make the commute here in Houston more bearable

There is no way I could afford to not use this car as a daily driver.. fortunately I will be close enough to work that I can ride my bike to work. I don't know if I would want to when I have an STi in the garage.

It would be even crappier if I wasn't comuting in a WRX. Thats why the Sti would also hit 100,000 in 2-3 years...as well it should. After all you buy a car to drive, not to stare at it in your driveway all day. If I had a Ferrari I'd probably be taking that for a rip in the snow right now.
