Default Urgent - Brake Service Advice Needed

My brother's WRX is in desperate need of new front rotors & pads. His car is at Carlsen Subaru right now, and they've quoted him ~$500 for parts & labor. He's called around a bit, and it seems like $450-$500 what most people were asking.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good Dealership or mechanic that he could take it to, that is reputable and might offer a better price (something in the area is preferable).

He really doesn't have much time to work on the car himself, but if it really would be simple (and would save him $200+ in labor) he might give it a try. But he's worried he'll screw something up, and doesn't want it to take more time/effort than he can give.

Any info would be helpful.

P.S. I can't search, it's broken.

Parts are only maybe $200 depending on if he wants to upgrade or use stock stuff. You can even get away with out having to bleed the brakes also if you want. There should be plenty of people local who can help you out with it.

So, what we've heard from the dealership is that they want $550 for the job ($160 for the front rotors + 90$ for the front pads + labor/inspection). According to the service manual, they've tacked on an additional $40 for the parts, and want good $250-$300 for the labor. I've told him to wait off for now, until I can see if I can find anything on NASIOC. They've still charged him $45 for the inspection (which also sucks IMO).

Now, what I'm wondering, if it would be at all possible to coax some of the BAIC'ers to give us a hand on the weekend to do the install. Especially anyone with tools and some experience with installing the brakes.

I know your bro has logged a lot of miles, is this his first brake service? (how many miles does he have on that car now?)

I'm on me third set of front pads and second rears now at 67,000, but I recall the cost being only a little less than what Carlson is quoting him.

by the way, imprezas -including WRX's have their brake pads covered by warranty up to 36,000 miles, so WRX owners should make a point of having their pads checked regularly before reaching that point.

He's at 81,000 miles now. I think he went through 1 set of pads so far all around (replaced somewhere around 60K I think). But there were some issues with his front brakes since he had the second set of pads put on, a fair amount of uneven wear between the pads and rotors, and now the front rotors are supposedly gone.

I don't have all the specifics, since the dealership isn't being overly descriptive from what I hear.

Hey,

let your brother know I have a set of Stock WRX front rotors that was on my car for about 8k miles.

and if he's willing to take a trip down to our shop located in Hayward, we can get it resurfaced and installed.

let us know!
