Default BMWCCA Ice Racing in the New York Times Today

Go down and pick up a copy of your New York Times. Ice Racing is on page D1 in the Escapes section. Kha0S' RE92 Evolution Superstuds are featured on page D8!

Thumbs up

*sigh* Really wish I could've gone. Couldn't justify spending the money to enter, or the equal amount on another tank of gas, though. Bummer.

I checked NYTimes.com the day after the race but no sign of it. I guess they waited til today's publication.

Yes I heard when I was at Exeter Subaru yesterday that Andrew did very well with his super RE92s, however not without a couple of ......... mishaps. C'mon KhaOS, own up buddy.

Default Heyyyyyyywaitaminutenow...

Ice racing, in common with any basement game invented by bored 8-year-olds, would seem to be driven by supply rather than demand. You have a frozen lake, dozens of high-performance cars and, this being New Hampshire in February, long stretches of time with nothing else to do.

..and...

"The most important thing is learning how to handle your car during the winter," said Stan Sr., who was idling in his wife's Subaru (license plate: NHLOV). He taught his children to drive (at age 12) by putting them on a patch of ice in the driveway

Okay. The article is pretty good, but in the case of the first quote, I think as New Hampshirites we ought to be pissed. "Nothing else to do??" Okay Yankees boy...!

And in the second? Is it wise to go and publish this lady's license ID? I know anyone can see it on the road, but there's a reason we all like to blank out the IDs when we post pictures...

What is that reason? I never figured that out. A license plate doesn't give away much useful information AFAIK. I'd love to be able to find out stuff with just plate info, it'd be fun for looking up the jerk in the [insert car here] who cut me off.

For between $5 and $50 you can use various resources (social engineering, private investigators, public records searches, etc.) to look up a person's history just from their plate number. The theory is that someone who wants to stalk you or steal your toys will go through the trouble of doing a records search on your plate number, get your home address, then come kill you and steal your rare collection of dusty vintage mothballs.

The RE92 Evolution tires performed very well on the ice, although, the excessive levels of grip proved to put a lot more stress on the driver and co-driver. Of three runs, two were DNF as a result of gates approaching much faster than we were accustomed.

Similarly, we suffered three flats over the course of the day, mostly incurred on the practice course. The worst was losing three screws on the inside edge of the left front tire from an 80MPH 40 degree slide.

Woops.

I expect that with some TLC between now and the next race, some extra sealant and screws, and another bottle or four of tire SLiME, we should be putting down competitive times in Class M.

/Andrew

(Also -- FWIW, the Jackson WRX is not "NHLOV" ... it's a little different. )
