Question fuel gauge is acting up on me...

So the WRX fuel tank is around 15.9 gallons in capacity and the reserve light comes on w/ approx 2 gallons to go (i.e. 13.9 gallons of consumption), right? When I fill up as soon as the reserve light comes on the pump usually gives me around 13.9 gallons before it automatically shuts off. But....

During the past two times I've filled up I've noticed my fuel gauge going to E much sooner than it used to in the past. It appears as though my fuel tank capacity has decreased and subsequently the reserve light comes on after only 11 gallons of consumption. So instead of filling up after 300+ miles the fuel gauge is telling me I need to fill up after 260 miles.

My driving habits haven't changed and my commute is pretty consistent so I'm pretty sure it's not me. Also, when I do MPG calculations I'm still getting consistent values (~23 MPG) before and after I noticed the fuel gauge acting up. I've been filling up at the same Chevron station for over a month and I even try to fill up at the same pump if I can.

I've got around 18k miles on my WRX wagon and this behavior started recently, i.e. within 500 miles. Also, I ran out of gas one time when I had around 12k miles and other than some random hesitation that went away after a while, the car has been performing fine up until I noticed the fuel gauge thing.

Anyone know what's up? Do I need to take this to the dealer or is there something I can do to rectify this?
