Default Windshield is CRAP! - need info....

My new 03 wagon, only 3 weeks..... and Friday I'm going down 101 in Marin and see a crack going across my windshield....

I pull over... check it, and it is the smallest impact, if it was even an impact - hardly even a chip, and you can't see it at all unless you look very, very closely.

So I think this is B.S. - that small a chip should not cause my windshield to crack all the way across.....

Anyone have this problem? Recommend good replacement shops/prices in the north bay? (live in marin, work in petaluma).

I am hoping to get Subaru to replace it with aftermarket....

Any feedback appreciated! - Zman

On my '02 I have a chip that I got less than 2 months after I got the car near the very bottom on the passenger side.

It still has not developed into a crack, even though this is supposedly a very susceptible area for a chip to grow into a crack.

About a year later I got another chip between the passenger and driver side, mostly towards the passenger side, almost right in the middle top/bottm wise. No crack has developed.

Maybe I got lucky, but my windshield has been holding up pretty well. Actually I wish one would develop into a crack, since I have zero deductible windshield replacement coverage. and these chips are far enough out of view and small enough that they aren't covered.

yes, my 02 wagon had a weak arse windshield too. i think it cracked like within a week of purchase. i know a few others that experienced the same thing too. my deductable fee was like $150! that sucked big ones. oh well look in the newspaper because they always have those ads where they say they will replace your glass for free as long as you got an ins. company they will work with. good luck

Guys don't feel bad. Here is a link to a lot of disgruntaled Subaru owners about their cracked windshields:

http://www.clubwrx.net/forums/showth...0&pagenumber=1

Seems to be an epidemic. Maybe Subaru should give us a TSB # on these too. And recall every last one of them.

My windshield got hit by a bunch of gravel falling off an overloaded quarry truck. It put at least 7 chips into the glass. Later that day a crack appeared from the black area at the bottom of the glass between two of the chips. The crack grew really fast so I had to get new windshield a few days later. I got mine from Safelite Autoglass. They originally quoted me $215 + $40 labour, but they didn't realize that the moulding has to be replaced as well. The total with tax ended up being $352. My insurance has a $500 deductable so I ended up paying for it myself.

Rock chips and cracks happen, I have gotten cracks in the windshield of every car I've driven (only 3). My brothers Acura got chips and cracks every other month, same with my parents Jeep. My windshield just got smacked by a large(sounding) rock last week, large crack appeared as soon as it was hit. Gotta see what my deuctible is now

If the chip/crack is smaller than a quarter then you can have it fixed. This happened to me a couple months back. $40.00 and the guy from ABC glass (sacramento company), made the chip and the small subsequent cracks almost dissapear with a garantee of the crack not spreading. The sooner the call to the glass folks the better. Also do not wash your window and avoid moisture. The process was interesting to watch and the guy from ABC had 20+ years of glass knowledge as I picked his brain.

I just got my chip fixed too, insurance paid for it all. $70.
Its just like one of those diy kits, except that the guy has an ultraviolet lightbulb or something to dry the stuff.
