Default insurance question, need some help..

i knwo i shoudl probably ask the tri state guys this but i dont want them to know i found a car

well, i have a 02 wrx, pay about 3k a year, i found a 98 rs that i want to buy, what if required for me to switch the insurance over from teh 02 to teh 98? im buying the car from a small used car dealer, do they handle all that stuff? they said if i were to show up to get the car with teh wrx that they woudl take the plates off teh car and put it on the other one and do some paperwork... is that how it works? because if it does, could i just show up with teh plates and all teh documents on the car so that it could be swapped over?

pretty much i cant be without a car for a day, i was going to get the 98 and after i get it drop the 02 at a dealer somewhere witha towtruck, can i do that?

thanks

The tri-state has already found out!!!

hehe

sure you can...but I think your insurance agent can handle all this...do it this way...

let's say you picking up the car on 3/1/03. Have your agent add the 98RS to your policy (effective on 3/1/03) and have him fax the insurance card to the dealer before you go to pick up. The 98RS dealer will get you the plates/reg/title when you show up for the car. (you will need to pay for the new plates).

ON 3/2/02, DRIVE your WRX to the other dealer and drop it off. Take off your plates/reg on the WRX and return your WRX plates to the DMV so you can cancel the WRX insurance...

You would have to pay extra for the new plates but I am sure it will be cheaper and less hassle than to tow the car

if you must do it this way, I dont see why not then...

just make sure your WRX is still insured until it is towed to the dealer and the title was signed over to them

for accident/theft purpose man...

what if tow truck got into an accident on the way to the dealership...

also since you will be dropping off the WRX the next day after you pick up the RS...what if someone steals it the night before you tow it to the dealership

The way you are doing it is just way to complicated...(maybe I understood wrong). This is what I understand from your 1st post...You are buying the 98RS at dealership A and selling your WRX the next day at dealership B???

Do you own your wrx? If its financed the WRX is registered to the bank that owns the loan, I dont think you can swap the plates.

if you own the WRX, just call your insurance company and have them add the RS to your policy and remove the WRX the night of they day yo pick up the RS, this way the coverage overlaps.

Your going to get a temp plate from the dealer, if you want to keep your plates (if you own the car) Just have the dealer use those plate numbers when they register the car for you if not just get new plates.

simple enough?

oh and yo have to call your insurance company to change your coverage, I do not think the dealer can do that for you, the car must be insured before they can register it.

or even more simple, screw your plates are you attached to them for any specific reason?

Call your insurance company add the RS to yoru policy, tell them to take the WRX off the policy at midnight of the day you pick up the RS, take the temp plate the dealer will give you.

then the dealer will register the car for you and give you the new plates.

im getting a storage garage that ill put the RS in till i sell the wrx... seems to be the best thing i can do now so that i can actually get money on the car. so i guess i got it all handled now

You really need to discuss this with your insurance agent ... s/he will explain what to do.
