Question ATTN SF Guys: Anyone Have STi Key Cut @ LOCKWORLD on Geary St.?

Hi all,

I know this a pretty specific question, but I thought I'd take a stab at it because I don't want my $30 STi key messed up. I've had it laying around for a while and figure I'd better get it cut soon.

I ran across a place called LOCKWORLD on Geary St. I don't know the cross street, but it's on the right side corner near the tunnel under Masonic (a couple blocks before Mervyn's/Office Depot/Good Guys complex if heading towards downtown on Geary St). It looks like a pretty big and professional shop from what I can tell driving by. Has anyone had their STi key cut there?

Some people have suggested just going to Home Depot, but the one near me (Colma/Serramonte) only has a key cutting booth. The last time I was there, the guy cutting keys looked a little "dishoveled." I'd rather not take the risk of having an expensive STi bookmark!

Thanks in advance,

CL

I have to get mine cut as well and can't find a place. I live in the San Jose/Milpitas area. I've called the Sub. Dealership and a few locksmiths and they don't/won't cut it!

Smile Poor & STARVING, but Key Cut!!

Well, maybe I should've held out a couple hours more to read some of your posts/suggestions. Where the heck were you guys, when I needed y'all?!!!! j/k

Anyways, I did go to the LOCKWORLD place on Geary St. in SF. At first, the guy was like, "We can do it for $8.50, but can't give you any guarantees." (after I mentioned that the key is worth over $30) I was about to head out and then asked if they knew of another shop more confident/would give me a guarantee (pay for another STi key if they messed up). The guy told me that they pretty much have the most accurate key cutting machines around, so my best bet would be to let him cut the key.

The place did look very professional and what swayed me was seeing some Integra Type R key blanks in one of their display cases. I figured if they could cut those, they could do a good job on my STi one.

Long story short, it took the guy less than 45 seconds to cut my STi key. The cuts looked very clean, and the key worked in all my doorlocks & ignition on the first tries. I paid the guy $8.50 and was happy he did a good job but did comment that the price seemed kinda high. He replied saying that's the price to pay for exclusive items. I guess he's right.

Oh well, finally got my STi key cut but had to skip lunch, since the shop took my freakin' lunch $$$!? I guess another day eating Bagel Bites & Ramen won't kill me!

CL

Btw, if any others wanna try LOCKWORLD out, they'll probably charge you less than $8.50. Just go in and tell him you want your key cut. Don't mention it's an STi or "special key." DEFINITELY don't mention that other shops won't cut it. I told em that too, so those remarks probably jacked the price up a few bucks!

A tip for anyone else that comes across this thread: Just take the danged thing in to the dealer and write your vin down on a piece of paper so they use that to make the key rather than make a copy. You'll get a key that's exactly like the one that came with your car, not a copy that may or may not stick when turning it. And if you go to a nice dealer like Carlsen they'll even do it for free!

Or like me you can go to the hated Steven's Creek where they'll charge you $10 and give you an attitude because you want him to use the vin instead of copying your original. Waah, made the poor guy have to go look up the key code in the computer, geez isn't there anybody at that dealer that's even remotely decent? Only reaffirms my satisfaction in buying my car from Carlsen
