When I go there. I always wish I had my car, because there are some really cool roads. Especially going through the presidio across the GG bridge. Then over in Salsalido (sp?) That's what I would do.

I haven't but still want to go to the Exploratorium.

Have a good trip.

I'd hit Monterey on the way to the Bay Area, drive along the Pacific Coast Highway into SF (beautiful views), stop by the Exploratorium/Palace of Fine Arts/Golden Gate Bridge/Golden Gate Park/Aquarium, go over to Sausalito, and enjoy all the food along the way.

Enjoy yourself up here!

Default Twin Peaks

go to Twin Peaks - you can see the whole city from up there - bring your camera.

for (not cheap) drinks/eats and another cool view go to Cityscapes (42nd floor of Hilton, I believe) on O'Farrel in downtown. If you go there for dinner, they'll validate parking.

Drive to Treasure Island (half way through Bay Bridge) - another cool view of the city, but nothing else

For freshly brewed beers go to Gordon Biersch on Embarcadero/Harrison.

Have fun!

Default depends

Depends on what you want to do.. is it a family trip or are you looking to check out the nightlife ?

Family trip: I'd say angel island (take the ferry from tiburon), GG park, and definitely take the sig other to a restaurant called Thanh Long (sounds vulgar, but it's a great place... get the pepper crab and expect to pay ~$70 / person including drinks).

Nightlife: Start around 11 PM at a place called "butter" (most taxi drivers in town will be able to find it for you). Excellent drinks, good music, very fun place. Definitely a good start. Other places to hit after that might be 550 Barneveld, or 1015 Folsom (which is kind of a young crowd for me, but I'm guessing you're a bit younger than I am...). There are many good spots that people will be more than happy to tell you about. When the sun starts to come up, head over to the Endup at 6th and Harrison. Excellent vibe, fun place, but only if you're pretty open minded and not going to be put off by there being a mix of straight and gay people in the crowd.

Good Luck.

Charlie

(edit: if youhaven't made hotel reservations yet... there a tons of opulent hotels in the city which are pricey, but for a great place with a lot of charm and in a good location at a good rate, I recommend the Chancellor Hotel - they're in union square... Mason street if I remember correctly..)

The mission is a good area to hit up if you want something different and fun but not touristy.

There are some good restaurants like Tokyo Go Go on 16th and Dolores. There are also several cool bars and clubs in the area, like Liquid and Blondie's.

Have fun!

If for some reason you take I-5, take the Patterson Pass Rd exit off 580 and drive through the windmill farms -- it's a nice curvy road too. Once you're in Livermore, a right on Greenville will get you back to 580. (A left on Greenville and right on Tesla will get you to many wineries -- but you want to see SF, not Livermore!)

So are you planning on taking in the sights, doin' the shopping thing, bar hoping, clubbing? It's gonna be tough to try to take in all The City has to offer. And you want to do things that regular vacationers wouldn't do.

Well...I don't know what kind of music you're into but we've got all kinds of clubs. Some folks already mentioned some. 1015 Folsom, 550 Barneveld. There's also this club called Remedy at the old DNA lounge. All three clubs play the house, trance, break beat, dance type of music. If that's your thing I've got passes to Remedy that I can try to email to you. I'm going to be there with my friends and my girlfriend...because free is good and Remedy has some sick ass dancers. But if you're into other types of music there's Kelly's Mission Rock, 330 Ritch, NV, Ruby Skye, Storyville...the list goes on and on. Just depends on what kind of party you're looking for.

If you plan on just drinking and not clubbin' during the night Union Street has a bunch of bars there as well as the surrounding area. And you can always catch a cab just about anywhere to anywhere.

Definitely try to hit up as much as all the other people mentioned. I mean you can't come to San Francisco and not see the touristy stuff. It's worth seeing. Do try to see things out of San Francisco if you can...there's soo much around here to see. If worse comes to worse pick up "The San Francisco Bay Guardian" or "SF Weekly"...they're one of those free newspapers that list all the stuff going on. You'll find them next to the newstands usually on busy street corners like in Downtown.
But do what I always do...Ask around. Where are you staying? Usually the folks in the hotels know of some spots. I'm sure you can tell who'd you would and wouldn't ask.

Sorry about the novel. I've just known folks from So Cal who come and didn't have a good time because no one gave them any ideas of where to go.

Be safe, have fun...and watch out for the BUSH MAN!!!

Start at Butter on Saturday night, then go to DNA Lounge across the street at 11 (two for one before 11). It's a great night at DNA. Avoid 1015 Folsom. Besides, who needs it when DNA is across the street?

Mr_Disco is right. 1015 isn't all that anymore.

I've found the passes for DNA. So if you need'em...

I would suggest u go to downtown SF to do a little shopping. Then at night find a decent Sushi restaurant (which is not hard if u r it the heart of SF) and have a nice sashimi dinner. Have yourself a couple te-kill-yaS afterward in clubing... I am sure u'll have a great time in SF.

Default S.F. Clubs

If you're from So Cal you're really going to hate the clubs in S.F. To put it bluntly, they suck. Sorry fans. All the SOMA clubs 1015, DNA, Butter, slims,...ect. Smell like piss and arm pits. Really nasty. If I go out to the city to meet with friends, I usually just stick to the "triangle" area over by Union and Folsom, lots of bars, food, and dancing. Everything is within walking distance. Be warned though, there are more Yuppies walking around than you can shake a stick at. If you like sushi, make sure you hit up Ace Wasabi's Rock'n Roll Sushi over by Stiener and Lombard.

Like I said though, the socal nightlife scene is way better, 10x the fun.

Yeah, if you're a yup, you should not go clubbing in Soma, but just go to the irish pubs in Marina or North Beach. I'm not to thrilled by how scensterish the whole town is... if you're an indie kid that listens to weird stuff, the Mission district is heaven.
