Default how safe is Oakland Chinatown?

So I'm meeting a friend at Jack London Square, and looking for a good restaurant, not too pricey but a little out of the ordinary, around there. Never actually been to Oakland since I moved here. I have no idea what it'll be like. Is Chinatown safe to walk to? Is it possible to park there? Otherwise we'll just eat near the bay or whatever. Any good eats around that area?

Oakland Chinatown's relatively safe to walk around at night, though i wouldn't advise walking there from Jack London just because its kinda far. Street parking's not too bad at night, but if you can't find anything, there's a underground parking structure at 9th and Franklin that's not too expensive. I think its like a dollar or 2 an hour. As for food, Oakland C-town pretty much sucks. If you gotta eat there and don't want to spend too much money, I'd say try Chef Lau's at the corner of 8th and Harrison. They have pretty decent food for a fair price.

Oakland police department is pretty much in Oakland chinatown. i've never had a problem with safety there. as for places to eat in jack london square.. u might wanna try that 1 Rib place. its right on Broadway i think? the main street that goes in. on the left. like 1 block b4 u hit the pier/water area.

Oakland's sketchy as hell! Don't come here unless you'd like to be murdered.

Jack London Square is about a 10 minute walk to Oakland Chinatown. Both areas are safe to walk in.

Jack London Square has more american fare (Spaghetti Factory, Uno's Pizzeria, Kincade's, TGIF's, Tony Roma's, etc).

My mom's restaurant is in Oakland Chinatown (yeah, gotta plug the family place ). Ying Kee Noodle House 373 8th St.

If you're looking for dim sum, I believe the new place on 7th and Franklin is open.

Battam Bang Restaurant (cambodian) is not bad either. That's on Broadway between 8th and 9th.

There are a couple of Korean BBQ places downtown, one of them may have moved to Telegraph, but bul-go-gi is always a winner or BBQ beef ribs (Alzheimers has left me no recolection of the name).

Just don't ask for Chi-go-gi or Ka-go-gi.

Just wanted to chime in to help out the "tourists." If you're unfamiliar w/Oakland Chinatown, Oakland in general, are a female, like to wear lots of BLING BLING/jewelry, fur....)you get the idea)....my honest opinion would be to NOT walk to/from Chinatown and Jack London Square.

The respective areas themselves are fairly safe to walk in at night, but out of town'ers may get lost or "look like targets," which often occurs when people do not know where they are going and/or are uncomfortable w/an area. Additionally, separating Chinatown & Jack London Square is a couple block stretch that passes under the freeway. It is quite dark there, even during the day, and homeless people are known to frequent that area. So, I wouldn't recommend going on foot there at night. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Btw, I have a couple of buddies in the Oakland Police Dept., so I'm pretty familiar w/the crime in the aforementioned areas.

Regards,

CL

I do think how you carry yourself makes for a big difference (and yes, I'm female). I've walked between the amtrak station and chinatown, and from chinatown to jack london square many times before. Never once have I been bothered.

I'm sure Mr_Disco knows the rules of the street being in SF though.

I think it is safe... I work right by the police station in JLS. It is a little tough to find street parking in Oakland Chinatown though. Not to mention all the double parked cars as well. Oh! At lunch time watch out for a crazy Filipino guy on a skateboard weaving through all the old Chinese ladies on the sidewalk... That would be me.

What time of day? In the day time it is safe but just be a little more careful if it's dark out if you are walking from JLS to Chinatown. One of my co-workers got mugged under the 880 near the Webster tube one night (she parks her car on the streets in that area). It was after work and she said nobody was around (other than the mugger, obviously). But that can happen anywhere so just be aware of your surroundings. Especially at night if you are walking alone.

I wouldn't say it was all that safe walking to Jack London Square from Chinatown and back, but it was probably a little safer than where I went to school in the South Side Chicago...

Yea I'd say oakland is safe. Why don't you go to International, or East 14th.

But seriously i'd only go if my car looked crappy and i knew some people that would have my back.

You might want to pack heat.

Awe man, I was going to print this thread out for some useful Oakland info and places to eat around there for my girl who's most likely going to Samuel Merrit College.

To me personally, Oakland is a joke and all hype if you've spent your childhood in South Central LA. But my girl is from OC, so LOL! You know how that goes, bunch a scardy cats.

I'm printing this out ONLY to show her that walking between Jack London Square and Chinatown is a bad idea unless you've learned martial arts cooking from Aya's mom.

-OLMEK

Oh how the nightlife in Oakland? (clubs, bars, etc.)
Would it be better to just head on over the SF for that?
