Default Red Line Light !?

I was just wondering how that redline light worked.

is it a PER GEAR light, i mean can you set it for every gear ?
does it BEEP ???
can you set it at any RPM you want... that would be interesing for daily commute, you could set it at 3K to save gas.

thanks

Yes, gas savings is the main reason I'm buying an STi.

It is user selectable.
It is supposed to beep, but I don't know if you can turn the buzzer off or not.

I think you can turn it on or off... I dont know exactly though, but I do know that there is a knob like the one for the odometer for the light.

You actually set it once..so let's say 6500..and that is standard for all gears.. Its more crude than say a programmable shift light.

If it is like the ones in the previous Sti clusters then you set it to the desired RPM and that is where it goes off in every gear. The beep can be turned off if you wish.. personally I love it.

Basically the way it is set is you turn the dial to the desired RPM, the lcd will display that RPM for a few seconds waiting to see if you change it more, then it beeps and displays on or off which corresponds to the audible beep setting and can be set from the same dial.. after that it beeps again to let you know you're all set.

You also can't play with it while the car is in motion, which is too bad cause then there'd be more salvage Sti parts on the market. j/k

Anyone know how loud the beep or buzzer will be? I drive my WRX in PCA track events, and I've bounced off the rev limiter a few times. With the windows down, at speed, you can no longer hear the engine, so careful monitoring of the tach is necessary. However, heading into multiple consecutive turns at high speed, requires focused attention on the road. And, especially with the WRX tach off to the side, it isn't easy to check it while doing laps.

I would love a nice loud buzzer or beep! So, anyone know how loud it is? Thanks!

If you can't even hear the engine.. you'll probably not hear the beep. However the light itself is surprisingly bright.. and hard to miss.

If I had to classify how loud the beep is.. I'd say the level of normal conversation.. or slightly above.

Yeah... at 80 - 110 MPH with both front windows open (PCA requirement), the wind noise is pretty loud. So, the beep would have to be pretty darned loud to hear. Plus I'm wearing a helmet, of course.

Hell... even a nice bright light would be a help... especially with a center mounted tach.

Thanks for the info!

Just an update to this.. I just put my sti cluster back in after converting it to mph.

With my windows down, at 6200rpm I could barely hear the beep with my full turbo back scoobysport exhaust and vishnu up-pipe.. add a helmet to that and I don't think you'd hear it at all.

Dunno what kind of exhaust you're running though.. stock should be a little better.

I don't know what color the shift light is; but if you replace it with a high efficiency high intensity blue LED it'll damn near drill a hole in your retinas when it lights up

im sure, in time, someone will find someway to wire it up to the speakers inside the car, if your STi is equiped with a sound system that is

I just ordered a current limiting (up to 3 amps) adjustable voltage (0-30 volts) two channel power supply today. I plan to do some gauge work (with my Omoris) and other car electrical work.

Ultimately, I'd like to have a unit that plugs into the back of the radio (or somewhere else in the wiring harness) and allows one to hook up gauges without having dimming problems. I'd also like to find out how to get the "switched ground" of some gauges like the Omori to work. A switched ground would mean that when the oil pressure, oil temperature, or EGT reaches a preset limit a red LED comes on and a 100 dB Piezo buzzer goes off.

If I ever get something like this made I'll post all of the instructions and part sources here.
