Default Blown Turbo????

Hey everyone,

Went out for my lunch break today, started the car and a haze of smoke out the tailpipe. Driving it goes away. Get to the restaurant and I notice same haze of smoke out tailpipe as I rev it (not at idle) and same haze coming through the hood scoop. Pop the hood and there's white/blue smoke coming from underneath the turbine housing area, it looks as if the entire turbine housing is smoking. Let it cool for 20 mins, check the oil, full. No recent changes of ANY kind, maintenance or otherwise. Only run 15psi with the profec, but I watch for PTFB conditions. Car has uppipe, downpipe, catback, profec, and a filter. 15k miles.

All the symptoms are pointing me to a blown turbo, which is fine cause I have another sitting around ready to go on. My question is do any of you with experience think this problem could reappear when I put my new turbo on? There are no leaks visible around the outside of the turbo (or anywhere for that matter).

Any insight would be appreciated.....

Jay

P.S: Yes, I used the search button and searched for blown turbo, and that does seem to be the consensus, however they do not address why with my specific set of mods/conditions.

15k sounds too early for a blown turbo...

could it be a leak from a coolant hose??

but then i'm not an expert...

Damned Subaru's.......

It's not doing it anymore. Seems to have been a fluke. Didn't make sense to have smoke coming from the turbine housing AND from the tailpipe. Oh well, musta been a full moon....

Welcome to the game show called "leaking exhaust-side turbo seals"

First I started noticing whitish smoke coming through the hood scoop at 13K miles, then I stared noticing an occasional 'funny' smell at 15k, then when I got on a AWD dyno at 17K I and everyone else 'noticed' gobs of blue smoke coming out of my exhaust.

Next day pulled the stock turbo off, no oil anywhere, replaced it with another stock turbo and the problem has not been heard from since.

Put in your new turbo, the problem will disappear.

As to me not finding any oil in the turbo, the explanation (as was explained to me) is this. The oil burns off after it leaks through because of the extreme heat in the exhaust. So you will not find any obvious signs of oil, however what you can notice is a slight resin type of residue on the walls of the exhaust side of the turbo. Run your finger around there after you get the turbo off and see if its more then just carbon deposits that gets picked up by your finger tip.

Good luck
sav
