Default Slow in the left lane!

Does anyone else notice the overwhelming number of people who drive slow (under the posted limit) in the left lane? I feel like I'm the only one on the road who actually has has somewhere to be, and everybody else is there to make my trip more difficult.

Example: While driving home the other night I saw two little old ladies in the left lane. Driving under the limit. NO lights on(it's dark outside). Left blinker on for no reason.

Where do these people come from? The bowels of Hell?

I went on a 30 minute rant the other night when we were going somewhere and my friend drove. He kept cruising in the left lane. He even moved to the right to pass a car, then moved back to the left lane, knowing full well that we had to make a right turn less than 1/2 mile down the road, and the right lane was completely empty at the time.

On 495 (beltway around DC) there are four lanes. The left lane and the right lane are the slow lanes and the middle two lanes are for the rest of us who pulled their heads out of their ass prior to starting the drive to work.

<rant>

And what's up with people not even trying to merge into traffic until the very end of the ramp? If there's a place, GET YOUR ASS IN THERE! Don't cut me off at the end because you don't have the balls to drive your car!

Did we become part of the UK? Do I need to start driving on the left hand side of the road? What memo?

actually with more and more of the traffic cops using laser... this is not a bad idea... they target their victims with a scope (put the red dot on the car) and seem to me to always work from the outside lane in... I have been in several spots where the extra split second of reaction time has saved me and the slower car in the fast lane has gotten the ticket.

Paul's right; cops will target the left lane first, all other things being more or less equal.

Funnily enough, I got hit with laser (according my V1) yesterday while I was doing roughly 80 to 85 in the left lane (NY state trooper was in the median shooting it from his window). I've noticeced the majority of police who use laser guns do so from the median, which is another reason it makes sense they'd start with the left lane and then sweep the other ones.

(Lucky for me there was a ton of traffic behind me, and by the time the trooper pulled into traffic I'd gotten off the highway and chosen an, ah, alternate route. )

Or the people who are only doing like 40 when they get to the end of the ramp and try to merge. I really don't appreciate this when I'm in the right lane passing all the slow people in the left lane

It took me over an hour today to drive 25.4 miles to Chevy Chase MD. 495 sucked because traffic was crawling and when I got to where the traffic picked back up there wasn't even an accident there or anything that would justify a backup.

The DC beltway is particularly notorious for traffic saturation. (By that I mean, when a roadway reaches and exceeds its designed speed & cars per hour limit.) It does not take an accident to create a tremendous backlog, just someone putting on their brakes and the chain reaction is enough to bring 4 lanes to a crawl. It's the strange confluence of social interaction and fluid dynamics.

The problem will only get worse, they seem to only enforce the speeding law more than any other on the highway. It's also against the law to drive in the passing lane aka fast lane if you're not passing anyone also. Until they start enforcing it then and give heavy fines for doing so it's not going to get any better.

They're basically slowing down traffic and the thing is that most people going slow in the fast lane think they're right. There's no excuse why you can't keep up with the flow of traffic, which is also in the driving manual. In other countries, it's harder and costs more money to get a license.

I got stuck behind some lady in 95' or so lexus ES300 infront of me today. She was on the phone the whole time.. gesturing with her hand she should have been using to drive.. And going REALLY slow.

She slowed at any intersection, even tho she had no yeild or stop..

and when she got to a stop.. she used that time to talk more as many chances for her to go came and went.

I just kept laying on the horn.. I was driving a 97' ES300.. the horn is nice and loud.. I was starting to annoy her.

fair is fair.
