Default L Motor... shot?! Please help

Got an Impreza L. bought it a few months ago. It seems to eat about 3 qts of Oil a month. I try to keep an eye on it. I dont worry about it much because I am likely going to do the ej22t swap.

Today I was driving it semi-hard and it started making a nasty sound, like rocks in the motor. I got home and checked the oil, and it didnt read. Added a Qrt, still didnt read. Added 2 quarts, and it read. Added the 3rd quart, and now it reads fine. But it still makes the rock sound. I assume I have internal damage now.

So I think its time to do the swap. Sound like it is dead? Should i even drive it now? I wasn't prepared for the swap yet.

Without hearing it myself, you probably spun a bearing (likely a rod bearing) and you are hearing the sound made by the metal to metal contact while the engine runs.
If you drive it, it will die at some point, possibly the next time you start it.
Sorry.

Think this will result in head damage? I would like to use this head on the next block if possible...

another thing i noticed... maybe it makes no difference...

if i am in nueutral and rev the motor, i only hear the ticking between 2000 and 2500 RPM

if i am driving, i only hear the ticking if i give it enough throttle to start accelerating.

if just cruising, no change in velocity, i dont hear any ticking.

With the (probably correct) assumption that you ate some rod bearings, your head is going to be alright. Worst case scenario, you break a rod end and there is the possibility of bending some valves. But that chances of that happening are pretty slim...
