Thumbs down Just saw Java Black

I took a brief but dissapointing look at the Forester in Java Black today. All the pictures I have seen of the STI have not been able to capture the true color in the sunlight. The only one is the closeup posted somewhere which shows the flecks.

Looking at it in the sunlight, the black on a clean car looks like it just drove through a sandy parking lot. It has this muddy kind of look that really dulls it out. Unfortunately this could be one black car that never looks clean.

I was looking forward to getting this car in black but I may have to change my mind.

This is just an initial observation, I'm probably going to take a second more thorough look at it tomorrow. I can take pictures if anyone is interested.

please take pictures at different angles to show the sandy/muddy effec and post them or email them to me at dwu03@yahoo.com

i am in the same situation as you and wanted to go out to a local subaru to check it out but haven't had time. my friends went out to a dealer and checked it out. they said it actually looked really nice? so i was convinced till i read your post. im still afraid of the "muddy" effect.

Thumbs down Same problem all over again...

I generally think black is the best color for cars, but even the midnight black pearl was too muddy for me.

In bright sunlight, I loved the blue highlights, and at night under streetlights, the whole car had a cool deep blue hue, but in 90% of the light conditions, it had a brownish tint to it.

I've owned a black car that had some metallic in it and didn't look muddy (I guess it would be called onyx since the metallic was all colors up close), but too much metallic always detracts from the depth of the black.

IMHO, black cars should be just plain fluid-like black. Subaru hasn't figured this out yet. <flame suit on>

yea my black civic looks dirty in the sun. The paint has this gold flake in it that looks kind of like sand in the light.

These comments remind me of the BMW black "metallic" colors Cosmos, and Carbon Black. They both seem like they would be pretty cool colors, but unfortunately in real life they just look dirty and washed-out most of the time.

Black is hard enough to keep looking good without the paint itself making things worse. A nice deep gloss black would have been the ticket for the STi. That said, I will probably take whatever color I can get.....even the black!
