Default STI Markup

so now the EVO is finally here and dealers are marking them up 8-9k over MSRP (one CA Mitsu dealer has a 20k markup on an EVO)what do you think we should expect on a STI when they become available. Most say they won't pay over MSRP but as with the Mitsu Dealers they are all marking up because people want to buy the car.

Say its $32k MSRP 8-9k will make it 40k How many will pay the extra just so they can be the first and how many will wait until they become more available.

Hi,

I would take some of the markups with a grain of salt. There are always a few knuckleheads who must be first and they will pay for the right. Many EVO "buyers" are reporting that once they established with the dealer that they meant business, the $10K markups quickly disappeared. Buyers are reporting 3k to 5k average markups in California with MSRP being more the rule as you move east. The car can be purchased at small and rural dealerships at MSRP even in California.

Concerning the $20K markup, the probable message on that sticker is "not for sale". The dealer wants to keep the car in the show room to attract walk-ins. I also believe that the enthusiast websites which are listing dearler markups has made it difficult for the gouging dealerships to make a big killing.

It is fortunate for me that I will not have to wait to get mine for MSRP. But if that were not the case I would be waiting to get one. Hell, I don't even like the idea of paying MSRP for it. But MSRP is probably as low as it is going to go for quite some time. There is zero chance that I'm going to fork over 5-10K of my hard earned dollars to a dealership so I can be the first kid on the block with the new toy. To me that's just the same as reaching into your pocket, taking out a waud of 50 to 100 ONE HUNDRED DOLLAR BILLS, and handing it to someone for absolutely nothing. That being said, there are those with more money and/or less sense, that will do just that.

I'll bet this will be the rule.

Of course, there will be the initial knuckleheads that will actually pay that.

I still even kinda have an issue with paying MSRP! I mean they already make a killing just on that!

The more attention brought to this issue on the boards and others, the better we all are off. Dealers have to know that the extra cash earned by jacking a couple of their allocation STi up to a ridiculous price will = bigger losses future sales b/c of the negative publicity.

My family has purchased all the Subaru cars in the family from the dealer where I have my deposit. No one will buy a car there again if i'm jacked with.

are there really going to be people buying the evo8s w/ such mark-ups?????

i would think they are insane to pay the extra 8k just to be the first one to own an evo...

no car is worth 1k over MSRP...that's my belief..

this is correct. Dealers already make a killing at MSRP. They still make plenty at invoice 99% of the time.

what a ripoff.

agreed... let's not downplay the dealer markups...
...the whole point is to get people thinking that a 3 to 5k markup is a lot better than 10k.

BTW, my local mitsu dealer just called me and he was begging me to buy an evo8. He had said that they were willing to lower the price to MSRP. I just laughed my ass off and asked him what had happened to the 8k markup? He was kinda quite for a second then he said, "We aren't selling as many as we had hoped to..." Last time I checked they had only one evo and now he said that they have 6 of them laying around for about a week... ...thats what u get for trying to mess with the knowledgable consumer...

All the better if Subie dealers do try to mark them up. I've mentioned this in other threads, but I'm gonna wait a while and see what happens with the MY04's. If they're sitting on lots here and there, you'll have some bargaining room. It'll be interesting to see what actually happens by, say, September or so.

Gillman actually did that? That is amazing after they screwed you. I'm still waiting to hear back from Austin Subaru about MSRP. We'll see...
