Default Exhaust BreakIN???

Hey, i just put my Apexi N1 catback exhaust on my 2000 RS, and i noticed that its very very quiet, like almost stock quiet. I had a borla b4 and it was much louder. Is there something on my car thats making it this quiet, are Apexi's N1's supposed to be this quiet? Is there like a break in process to make it sound and funtion normally. Ive heard reviews on this exhaust and every1 says its loud as balls. Can anyone help me?

Yeah when I put my apexi N1 on it was a lot quieter than it is now. First thing, make sure you have the silencer out of it. As you drive around for the next couple of days you will notice little particles flying out of the exhaust. I am pretty sure its some sort of packing material for the new muffler. Anyway, after all that has worked it way out, the exhaust will open up and scream to the world. It's weird how it works, but you will be fine.

I heard that the Apexi is pretty tame with a resonator.

it will definately get louder. When i first put on my scoobysport i was like this is a quiet exhaust, everyone says its so loud!! I noticed that it was quieter in the mornings when the car had not been driven that much. or even when i got in the car for short trips. But if i was in the car for a while driving around all night the thing was boombing, popping, and gurgling like mad by the end of the night. After a few weeks it was definately louder all the time.

Recently i had a new midpipe made with 2.25 inch piping and i had the resonator and the pre-res chamber removed. and now it sounds loud all the time. Not really much louder than with the resonators.... just fuller, more gurgle-y, but not obnoxious.
give it some time to break in then decide what to do with the resonators

Hey Pat L.I.,

How loud is the scoobysport exhaust? Did you do a catback or a full turboback? Does anyone know the dB level of it by chance? I've heard mixed opinions as well concerning the loudness of it. Everyone agrees that the sound is great. I'm just concerned about how loud it is. Does it still produce decent gains if I do a catback only? CA emission laws are a real pain here, or else I would have sprung for a full turboback.

Riight112 - i drive a 2002 rs and i did the cat back. with a custom unresonated midpipe and the scoobysport axleback. It is not super loud but you will definately hear it... It is far from obnoxious. It has a great offbeat braaapp when accelerating, and nice gurgles when engine breaking. It is pretty bassy - is that a word? .... you will love it if you get it.
It also has a very low key look, a tip not
that much bigger than stock.
let me know if you have anymore questions.

u know what. I really dont think subarus can be intrusively loud. When i was putting on my exhaust, i ran the car without anyexhaust on it from the cat on. It wasnt very loud. My buddies honda is 100times louder than my car with an OBX catback then my car was without any exhaust system.

My borla is pretty intrusive as well. I've gotten somewhat used to it, but on long highway trips I usually wear earplugs.

You'll definately notice a different after like 1500-2000 miles on the exhaust. I put my Stromung on, it was louder then stock, but still not as good as I was told it would sound. 2000 or so miles later it really sounded like it should have.

exhaust will get louder as the inner packing will diminish a little, but i've owned an apexi n1, and it wasn't quite, wasn't as loud as the blitz but definitely not quiet, maybe you have an exhaust leak or something.

as far as how loud is the blitz, at idle its like 96db, at high rpm its about 104db.

Question tanabe break- in scents

I only have had my tanabe super racing medalion catback for about a week on my rs. I noticed the same thing that everyone has commented on, not being as loud as the reviews said at first impression. although I love the the back fires, burbles and the way this exaust screams from 3500 to 6000. also deceleration from about 3000 rpm's sounds like a bass drop. Ive already noticed its getting alot louder but I also do delivery so I have already put on a couple hundered miles in a week. one thing I noticed that no one has said is that when redlineing my car now its smells a little like sulfer every once and a while when the windows are rolled up or down. is this normal for the breakin period or is there something wrong. I got it installed by a meinake dealer so not to mess anything up.... I hope I didnt waste that money on a so called professional installation. has anyone else ever smelled new scents when getting a new exhaust?

n1 is been rated to be one of the loudest exhaust out in the market, i have and evo and when i first intalled it was not loud at all , which it is not surpose to be at all too, but after a couple of hundred miles it started to be louder , but it has a grunt to it , so i would believe it would get loud.

I run the n-1 catback on my 01 and is was pleasantly grumbly when I put it on. I have put about 35,000 miles on it now and she rumbles pretty good when I come down the street. No droning at highway speeds though.....sign of a good exhaust system.

it's a plug and play mod, no break in... you only break in things that are "wear and tear" parts. such as, motors, tranny's, brakes, turbos, clutches, .... i think thats it...

Question wear and tear/ plug and play

what about the glass wool packing that is inside of some mufflers does that deteriorate after a long period or short period of time. Tanabe's web site says their wool stays the same forever is there any truth to this? Does it get clogged with particles of carbon? I dont know, Im just curious? does anyone have an exaust that is packed and has had it for a long time. Did your sound or performance decrease over time or get louder and better over time?
