Unhappy Rattle in the Random Tech Cat

I have an increasingly louder rattle from my Random Tech high flow cat. After some close inspection, it is definitely coming from inside the unit, it's not just a rattling heat shield or hanger issue. I've done a search and found at least one post about a somewhat similar problem, but couldn't really tell from that what the problem was. Has anyone had this problem, and is there a way to fix it?

Thanks,

yeah replace it, the bonding has come loose on the cat and it's bouncing around in there.

Exclamation You are correct!

I pulled the cat out this weekend, and bouncing around is an understatement. Although the element seems to still be captive in the unit (it won't come out), it is definitely not still connected to anything. It sounds like a large rock rattling around in there. I'm only surprised that the rattling noise while it was on the car wasn't worse. I guess it was just that I couldn't hear it most of the time over the sound of the exhaust. It had gotten progressively louder.

We'll see how the idea of a return is treated by the vendor. I got the cat as part of a COBB power package.

Thanks,

Had the same problem with mine. The reason is the honey-comb inside is falling apart. You can either hollow it out or get a new one. I went and hollowed it out. Now the c/e light is on all the time. Been like that for over a year. Makes a wicked backfire too ... But get it done soon because it will go down your exhaust and stall out your car. Good luck

Default That post you referred to may have been mine.

I dont like the quaility or the service of random Tech.
Mine did the same thing, they're junk($300 worth). I still have it and its hollowed out or should be by now (I removed the pieces out of my muffler, lol). Its gives a tinty sound which not sure I like to much. But I definitly tell a difference over stock now thats its hollowed out. And man, You want to talk about LOUD. I have the stromung SS cat back with dual tips and it sound like a race car. (HEHE) Let me know If you have any other questions.

Arrow OK so far

All these things sound familiar. I had the same loud exhaust that you described; CEL and backfires too. I didn't even realize just how loud until I put the stock cat back on. Unfortunately, hollowing out the cat is probably not really an option if I want to keep it on for yearly smog inspections. It did pass the first one with no problem other than the need for a little extra warm up time.

On a positive note, I got quick replies from COBB and RandomTech that they would treat this as a warranty issue. We'll see how that progresses and if it results in some sort of repair or a complete replacement.

Thanks again for the replies.

Did you gain more performance after the catalyst broke apart and fell out?

Question Since when?

I just packed up mine for return under the warranty. I'm wondering if the new one will be different than the original that I'm returning (purchased about 10 months ago). If so, maybe I'll reinstall it. If not, I may opt to sell it in anticipation of putting on a turbo that wouldn't be compatible with the cat anyway.

Correct, so I've heard.
Does your insuniate that it is the newer metallic Random Tech's that are falling apart?

Any firsthand reports of problems with the newer metallic RT cats?
