Question Requesting info and suggestions...How much is it going to cost?

Yeah...see, I have had a love affair (don't tell my girlfriend ) with MR2's since I bought one for my very first car. My MR2 is kaput, and that pains me so.

This dude, is selling a rust free MR2 "Chameleon" bodied Supercharged one but it doesn't run. He has three engines, that don't run, but collectively they amount to one working engine.

Since I'm not at the level to fix the car myself, although I'm more than willing to learn, I need to know a good estimate of how much it'll cost me to get er fixed, excluding the paint job?

Oh yeah, I'll end up with mucho extra parts because I still have my N/A MR2 on the side of my garage.

Well in my estimation the paint job is potentially the most expensive aspect of your quandry. The parts & labor to jag together a working powerplant from said three engines could also prove costly.

My guess is 3500$ or more

Recently a friend had R and R Machine in Villa Park rebuild his DSM motor. They do good work at decent prices. If I recall, his full build up was a little over a grand. That consisted of tearing down the whole bottom end, hot tanking everything, boring the cylinders, machining the con rods, file fitting the rings, and putting everything back together with new bearings. They did a very nice job. Doesn't sound like you'd need as much work, so it probably wouldn't be too bad. Sorry, I don't have their phone number. As for paint, I'm trying to find that out myself. I just got an '85 NA MR2 that BADLY needs paint, new suspension bushings, shocks, springs, tires, wheels, new inner steering rack bushing, and ummm... Basically, its a good thing I got it for free! I need some interior parts, so if you're parting out a car, let me know.

Best of luck,
Shizz

If you see a hoopty old MR2 that's mostly white and some primer in the aurora area, that's me!

I'm sorry. When I said build it up, I meant build it back to stock. There is very little aftermarket support for this car left in the world, so I just want to make it stock and use it as a toy car for the weekends.

I sure hope you guys were thinking of modding the hell out of it, when you gave me the $3500 quote.

You're kidding about the aftermarket support, right? Or just not talking about the engines?

They still use the 4A-GE in Formula Atlantic, as well as race series all over the world. There's probably been more aftermarket development done to it than any other Toyota motor.

I know where you can find a running NA motor for $300, locally. Dropping that in would be cheaper than trying to frankenstein a motor of all your pieces. I also know of a white '89 being parted out in Southern Wisconsin.

How nice do you want the paint job to be? Are you going to change the color? You can easily spend $3500 just on that, if you're doing it right. Or, you can go to Maaco for about $150.

I was going to mention the paint also but hillman nailed it right on.

On another note... how can you purchase a car and make it SLOWER! Ok, I know it doesn't run now, but I can't see taking-OFF a supercharger

And, you really did'nt describe what's wrong with the three motors that you would have. If one needs plugs to make it run then ya, it wont cost much. It all depends on what it would take to make one run.

And the paint job is up to your discretion, if you want crap, get crap. If you want it to look good & last then it will cost more. That's all there is to it.

Busted head gasget which supposedly rusted out the bottom half of the block. ...that's what the guy said, but I could've sworn that coolant was an anti-corrosive.

If I were to just buy an engine, it would have to be the Supercharged one. Why bother buying a Supercharged MR2 and then drop an N/A motor in it?...But, supercharged MR2's are extremely rare.

I'm not worried about the paint job yet. I have a friend who does that for a living. I know he'd be able to hook me up with a nice paint job. I'm really conserned about the engine and getting the car running. After all, what's the use of painting it if the car won't run? And I don't see any advantage to the purchase if it's going to run me 3X what the car will be worth after its done.

I know that I won't make a profit if I fix it and sell it, but I still don't want to spend wayyy more than it will be worth, later on. There's only so much I'm willing to throw away for fun.

BTW...why are all the smiley's green? Are they sick or something?

Probably in honor of St. Patrick's Day? At least that was my guess when I noticed it this morning.

I know nothing about MR2's, so I don't have anything on-topic to contribute.

If the chassis on the current car is still sound, it seems like overkill to me to buy a whole new donor car. I'd just find a new motor. But then, I don't have room for one, much less two, mk1s sitting around. If I did, I'd have a couple

People have been dropping all sorts of engines into mk1 bodies lately, so you're not limited to just the 4A series. There's at least two 3S-GTE powered cars running around, and one, hopefully not more, with a supercharged Buick V6.

A later-model 20V 4A-GE will give a mk1 a power-to-weight ratio greater than a stock WRX. If I wasn't concerned about class rules, that'd be my choice, FWIW.
