Question Thinking of buying a 99 Outback

I am looking at a 99 Outback (Rocky Mountain edition) with 65k on it. I test drove it and other than a little rough at idle it seemed okay.

The stealer is putting it through their shop today and the head saleseman is a friend of a friend so I trust him more than usual. Is there anything that I should look out for on this model or year? BTW, they want just over $13k for it which he said was wholesale (12500) plus whatever their shop costs are (including $275 for 4 new tires).

Any advice is appreciated.

I have a '99 Outback and I absolutely love the car. I needed something that I could haul a lot of stuff long distances. I bought it right before I moved from Colorado down to Arizona for college and 2 years later its still running great. It has about 48,000 on it right now and the only problem I had was a leak in the oil pump which was fixed under warranty. Otherwise I would say if you change the plugs and fuel filter it should run like a top. I would definately give it two thumbs up. Granted it is a limited edition Outback I would say that $13k is about right. Hope this helps.

Default OB advice

First qn: what's a rocky mountain edition?? Sorry, I live in NJ, all I know is that my 2.5L '97 OB, fully loaded with all my junk, kept on getting passed by all these H6 OBs when I was driving thru' CO!!

Secondly: Head gaskets. Every owner of the EJ25 engine learns to be wary of them sooner or later. Do a search and you'll see it come up over and over again.

Thirdly: 5MT or AT? if MT, watch out for slipping clutch/clutch shudder. Subaru's supplier made lousy clutches up until recently, they've got a fix for it and so far (knock on wood) it's been good.

Apart from that, the OB's a great car. I love mine.

Get the coolant tank checked for exhaust gases. Many many late 90's legacy models with the 2.5 suffer head gasket failure... speculation says it's a manufacturing issue since the head gasket has undergone about a half dozen revisions since it was introduced.

Also drive a few tight figure 8's in a parking lot to check for binding. If it feels like it's sticking or having trouble in tight turns, I suggest walking away.

AWD Binding and Head Gaskets are the main issue on these cars from my personal experience and observation.

Saw in the local paper yesterday (Washington St.):

1999 Outback, AT 2.5L 35,000 miles $8,850!!!

I'm trying to talk my mother to ditch her caprice classic and jump on the subaru bandwagon, pun intended.
