Default Installed: STi RA Gear Set, the gears the WRX should have come with stock!!!

Wow!!

What a difference these gears make!!

Each shift greets you with immediacy that just isnt there with the OEM gears.

Its feels like you are shifting through a relay race, really picking up where the last one left off...

Special thanks to RalliSpec for the install... unfortunately they are really backed up in business right now and arent taking anyone until sometime in June.

Dave @ RalliSpec has really worked with me and has done a great job. He was up front and honest, something very refreshing to me in this field... I have has some bad experiences in the past with tranny techs.

I am not sure how the OEM gears are treated, but Dave told me the RA gears are shot-peened from the factory, and in addition he has the RA gears cryo-treated on his own, included in the package.

The ratios for the US WRX vs STi Type RA gears (assuming redline shifting @ 7k):

Code:
	WRX (US)
	ratio	overall	mph
1	3.454	13.471	38.5
2	1.947	7.593	68.2
3	1.366	5.327	97.2
4	0.972	3.791	136.7
5	0.738	2.878	180.0
fd	3.900

	Type RA
1	3.083	12.024	43.1
2	2.062	8.042	64.4
3	1.545	6.026	86.0
4	1.151	4.489	115.4
5	0.830	3.237	160.1
fd	3.900
As you can see, the RA 1st isnt quite as aggressive as the OEM 1st... but everything else is much better.

Honestly 1st doesnt feel all that much different... its the rest of the gears that you can really appreciate the improvement.

I am very happy!

just the gears and all the installation:

1350 + 850 + 6% sales tax on the 850= $2251

The 850 includes all labor and rebuild parts.

Thanks for posting an review! I remember an month ago I think saw an post of you saying you were getting these installed and I was pretty interested to see your reaction..

I was planning on getting the RA gear set installed next summer probably at Rallispec also(long-term goal), I didn't know they had the gears cryo-treated as well thats great!

Plan on going to the track soon? Any ideas on how it will affect your e.t. and mph?

hopefully + and +!

Seriously though... all things equal otherwise, I think I will pull a mile per hour or 2....

These gears put you into a shorter/stronger pulling 4th.... SOONER.... so I am hoping at the very least the mph will improve....

Most stock/mildly modified WRXs can tell you that the 3/4 upshift is almost optional.... and even heavily modified, getting into 4th prolly occurs just before the 1000ft mark, perhaps just after.

Anyway, now I will be shifting into 4th near the 1/8th mile, and will be deep into 4th gear, actually making it worthwhile for the shift...

WOW! Thank you for the great, informative post! I LOVE the
gear ratios. I think this is one mod I would definately like
to do. Have all the strength and ratios of the STi tranny at
a fraction of the cost. And honestly, do we really need a 6th
speed? The speed limit in the states is only 65 anyhow...

Thanks a lot for the post - this looks like a really good upgrade, and not as expensive as I had suspected. I was wondering if it is easier to change down into 1st now at speeds like 20 - 25 mph, and whether reverse engages easier. The idea of a higher first and all the other gears lower seems ideal for regular street driving.

Did you replace the shift forks?? Did it come with a full syncro set?? Are they brace? Do you still feel that there is case flex or just a crappy stock weak gear set??

Thanks
Eric
