Default I'm on a roll. Tell me what you think of this idea

since I got up on my soap box earlier( http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=332804 ), I decided to try again.

I think that the tobacco age should be changed to 21.

Reasons I think this.
1) I smoke, I wish I didn't
2) I started when I was young (14)
3) I just turned 21, and I think I could make a better decision now
4) I got started by an older crowd (16-19yo)
5) I could never buy them myself, so I relied on older friends to buy them.
6) because of the age range in highschool it was easy to find someone to buy them.
7) At age 21, I would never buy cigs for young kids
8) I understand its still my fault, but at 18 I was dumb and bulletproof.
9) I understand how much it would suck, for kids smoking now, to get cigs, if this changed, but I know its a better life without cigs.
10) No real smokers like what cigs do to you, but they are addictive, so they cant stop.
11) Most smokers wish they never started, because it kills you.
12) lung cancer
13) most smokers started young.
14) at 21 you can make a better decision on how you want to live your life.
15) plus so many more reasons to list.

PLEASE ADD COMMENTS

this isnt a new idea, but we dont hear enough about it...

Big tobacco and the government dont mix, or else this would be taken care of already.

the govt isnt stupid, it see's how much money they can make.

I put the "would" in the wrong spot it should read
I smoke and it would have stopped me from starting.

If you did that, there would be too many years between the drivers license and drinking. You hafta have something to live for.

If adults (18 or over) are old enough to be sent into Iraq by a tyrant to kill people then they should be able to smoke. Not only that but they should be able to smoke whatever they want (hint: MaryJane, puff puff pass, Bob Marley).

Now if people want to kill themselves by smoking cigs than that is their right. Tell the govt. to get the **** out our lives for once and for all

Raising the legal age to buy cigarettes to 21 wouldn't help at all. Hell, I started smoking at 15. I'm not proud of it, and I genuinely wish that I hadn't, but I'm addicted now. It sucks.

Now, if they bumped the age up to 19, so that highschoolers couldn't buy em, that'd make a little more sense.

to buy booze u gotta be 21
all narcotics are illegal
you need a prescription to get zoloft, vykadin, etc..

but all of those are super easily accessible, i doubt raising the age to 21 would make much of a difference.

well considering big tobacco is a multi-billion dollar industry, this would never happen.

but just raising tobacco to 21 "because there are no downfalls" is the same argument that could be used to say, "you need a permit to purchase alcohol and tobacco or take a class" or "make the age 25". you cant just say, raise it to 21 because whats the harm. unfortunately it doesnt work like that

I guess that more of my point in a different way...
One mentioned that its another thing for the govt to take away... well thats the problem... they are the last ones to who would want this. We arnt controlled by the govt, we are controlled by big biz, and they control the govt (for the peoples attention).. Sucks, people have to die so others can have a $20 million house.
Yes its our faults for starting, but there is no need for cigs, they do nothing but kill you. The only people who like them are the ones not additcted, but as soon as they get roped in, its all down hill from there.

No. You should be an adult at 18 (or even earlier). You should be able to smoke, drink, join the army, whatever ... What is it with this country treating people like children into their 20s?

PS Try including some idea of what the thread is about in your titles.

Oh, but it did with an industry as large in the 70s when they raised the drinking age from 18 to 21.

See what happens when you post at 3:24 AM?

smoking should just be banned as it is. I mean, marijuana isn't as bad as cigarettes, and that's illegal...it only makes sense... (no, I don't smoke pot)

I think motorcycles should be banned, too. They are also pretty dangerous.

Wait, you're saying that you started long before it was legal anyway. So changing the legal age would help... how?

Raisn legal age limits only adds to the mistique of activities like smoking and drinking. In cultures where there are no set ages for these things they do nat have the problems with binge drinking that we do. Tobacco is bad, but like any addiction it can be beat, I know because I used to be a 1.5 pack a day smoker. I quit 6 years ago cold turkey. I quit once, and have never gone back. Society cannot be held responsible for all of the habits of it's citizens, although I do liek the whole, no smoking in any public place thng in Cali, it makes bars much more fun for nonsmokers. This kind of social ousting of smokers is far better at discouraging smoking than an arbitrary legal age limit.

read down the list farther... I got them from 18 year olds in highschool. Kids I went to school with everyday.

Turbosnow- I agree with the fact that if ya cant do it, it makes ya want to do it more, but I think young kids will have a hard time finding 21 yo's to buy cigs for them... I know I wouldnt buy a 14yo cigs right now.
