Default In Europe, what car would you buy?

OK here's the scenario (which is my current situation ).
You move to let's say...England or France or Italy. If you have oh, let's say...20k dollars/Euros to spend, what car do you buy? Remember, fuel is more expensive, taxes, etc....

20k won't get you much in Europe.

I'd probably get a Peugeot 206gti

Ok, make it 40k dollars/Euros then. I don't yet know what my salary will be once I transfer, so it's a bit hard to budget.

how long are you going to be there?

really, this would have a lot to do with my consideration.

I wouldn't want to have a really nice car over there, because they all seem to get beat up over there with smaller parking spots, smaller streets, and cobblestones, bumps, and hazards everywhere! I would probably just get a 1.0 or some other little POS if i was going to be there for less than a year. If i was going to be there for a few years, then i'd go ahead and get something nicer and something cool that you couldn't get in the US. the 206 would not be a choice, however, as the road going variety a PileOS

I might choose a Fiat Coupe (don't know why i like them, but they have an appeal for me), or whatever the Hotrod Beetel is over there (RSX? RTS? i don't remember) or maybe even a Focus RS (aren't they AWD?) Stuff like that is what i'd look at. I guess it also depends on your "situation," i.e. is a wife going, kids, pets, clients important? stuff like that.

Civic Type R should fit your 20k euro requirement. I don't really know what else is available over there for that price.

Bjlee:
In all likelihood I will be moving to Clamart, a suburb of Paris, and also it's a "permanent" assignment, meaning basically I can stay as long as I wish and have a ticket home whenever I choose.

Most likely I will be able to utilize the Metro/bus system to commute to work and the car would be for exploratory trips around Europe and perhaps a track day here and there if I can find an avenue for such.
