Unhappy HELP...car running like crap...

This morning I was way down on power under 5k rpms. Over 5k rpms it would surge but still felt rough. Full throttle in any gear feels like a 4 cylinder Baja, only rougher. It was fine last night I drove to Vineland and back (40 miles and back mostly highway). The power curve is really lumpy, its sluggish, and like I said, over 5k it surges very noticeably.

Could it be a bad tank of gas, or something more serious? No CEL by the way. I filled up 24 hours ago.

2002 WRX 5MT 37k miles.

No mods.

I have a service appointment w/ SOA in two weeks but I wanted to do some of my own investigating.

Rough makes it sound like you might be missing a cylinder, perhaps a bad plug or coil on the plug. Hmm it might also be a problem with the turbo only. Actually, the turbo cutting in and out might cause these exact symptoms, might be a malfunctioning wastegate actuator or boost solenoid. this might not cause a CEL either, this could be cause by something as simple as a loose vacuum line in the turbo syustem somewhere. Poke around there and see if there's anything obvious, hanging line etc.

could be bad gas or bad sparkplug wire. I'd check the wires.

WRX i thought had direct ignition (no wires)? I poked around under the hood for a while, didnt see anything loose/broken/leaking/etc. I went out for a drive at lunchtime. Still feels crappy. I know my car. I know its feelin like a turd right about now. If I reset the ECU and that changes anything, what would that tell me?

These newfangled computermajigers confuse me

Most likely an ignition problem that bad would result in a flashing CEL so it may not be a misfire. There are no wires, just the coil packs on each plug. Bad gas is a definite possiblity. Even without a CEL it might be helpful to put a scanner on it to monitor what the engine is doing.

anyone got a scanner?

it doesnt feel like a misfire....i know how that feels.

its just super sluggish....but like i said over 5k rpms the power kicks in somewhat normally.

feels like VTEC

should i stop using citgo? I never go lower than 93 octane.

How is the idle?
Have you listened for vacuum leaks while it was running, felt underneath the IC to make sure the hoses are still on, etc. ?
Do you have a boost/vacuum gauge, if so what are the readings?

idle is smooth and it even takes off like normal without any lugging or hesitation but when i get on it it feels like its low on boost.

unofrtunately i dont have a boost guage but if i had to take it a guess it sure FEELS like theres a lack of boost. I listened to it idling with the hood up and didnt hear anything unusual, except maybe a very faint high pitched whistle...but that very well could have been there the whole time.

maybe a bad fuel injector? i'm going to go out and check the IC hoses in a little bit...before it gets dark if i get a chance....

It's nto a bad injector, or it would be leaning out the fuel mixture more and more as the RPM goes up and would almost definitely throw a cel. I really thinking that you have some sort of vacuum/boost leak in the boost control system. This would be consistent with the slight whistle that you mention. Also as engine rpm rises you might be overriding the leak, you couls also have an exhaust leak before the turbo that is in effect self sealing enough at higher exhaust velocities to spool the turbo.

I have the Auterra scan tool software on my Palm, and I'll be tutoring in Marlton tomm (Wed) from 4-5 PM. I need to be in Ocean City, NJ by 6:30 PM for another tutoring appointment, but if you can be somewhere around the intersection of Rt. 70 and 73 before 5:30, we can plug in the tool and see what's going on. And maybe I can test drive your car and offer you a trade for my '96 Legacy wagon+cash...the Legacy has 5% tint, tow hitch, and WRX rims and head unit, too while we're at it Then any probs ur car has will be my problem not urs. hehe, i need a turbo car again!!!

Dang! Well, I'm turoring in Glassboro until 4:45 PM on Thurs, but Friday I leave for NH for 3 days. If you throw a CEL or need help after that, I'm probably available on Mon/Tue of next week....plus I'm truly interested in checking out your ride. I need to get back behind the wheel of an AWD turbo again, this EJ22 Legacy wagon is great and all, very practical, and sporty looking, but I miss BOOST!

No problem Mark...if I throw a CEL i'll get an emergency appt with SOA (where I work in Cherry Hill) but until then I gota wait like a week or so. You are more than welcome to drive it but beleive me it wont be much fun.

I just went out and checked all the intercooler hoses and other vacumm lines, ran the engine, tried to feel/listen for a leak, could not find a thing wrong, at least with my inexperienced eyes.

Tonite I will reset the ECU (disconnect negative cable overnight) and see what happens in the morning. Maybe I'll try the Vishnu trick

I very much doubt a reset is going to fix your problem. Maybe spend the $2 for a container of dry gas and dump it in the tank in case it's water in there. If it is that should make a noticeable difference.
I've got a scanner but unfortunately I'm nowhere near you.

something to do with resetting the ecu and the driving at a specific boost level in 3rd gear for a specific amount of time.

Well it worked. The drygas was in the tank overnight and i hooked up the negative cable this morning and drove to work.

Amazingly, everything is BACK TO NORMAL.

What was wrong with it? The world may never know. Someone suggested changing my spark plugs. I think I will do that soon. But I got mad asian powa back!

My suggestion would have been:

1) get in car
2) drive around to side of building at work
3) Tell them to fix it
4) Drive home with freshly fixed car after work

Theres always a waiting list for the SOA service shop. So I try to fix things on my own before having to leave it in someone else's hands. I learn more this way
