Lightbulb Big Wing reduction idea

Those of you who think removing the wing is unsafe or lame, please don't post in this thread.

The STi wing appears to be 2 pieces. Does anyone know how hard it would be to just take the top piece of teh wing off, and cover the remaining little winglets that stick up with body color painted little covers?

Trading the STi wing for the WRX wing looks unfeasible, due to the extra holes in the trunk. I think I could like the look of the STi wing with the big top part removed.

Some lucky vendor could charge $30 for primed pieces, $50 painted, and probably $100 for carbon fiber ones.

Any ideas here?

I cant quite picture what you are thinking of, I'm picturing two vertical stumps with some sort of cover on them, like two airplane tails on the trunk. Could you photochop one? I don't think the wing is actually two pieces, I believe it is one molded part.

After seeing it in person, I'm pretty sure that the line that is visible in the pictures is a dividing line between two parts of the wing. I'm suggesting detaching the top part at that line, and covering the small remaining little stubs with a cover.

This isn't the STi, I don't think, but the line here is what I'm talking about.

If it gets your sail up, go for it. I don't think that it would look really good, myself, but that's my opinion. If you get one, it's your car, do whatever you want and ignore everyone else.

Unless you cover it in Christmas lights, then you should be flogged.

The caps may look awkward but I don't see why a lower wing could swapped on to the posts. It would look similar in concept to the 3000GT spoiler but attached at the ends. Personally, I would keep the wing on since 1) if you want to be low profile, this car can't be regardless what you try to do. 2) It would alter the image of what STi had designed for us. But whatever floats your boat.

If the STI spoiler is not to your liking i am very sure that there are a few WRX & 2.5RS owners willing to swap trunk lids with you!! I'm going to swap mine with the 22b type with carbon and is also adjustable, well every one to their own, happy motoring see ya Colm

I personally am ambivalent about the wing. On the one hand, it will certainly have the "boy racer" connotation to it by the vast majority of observers. If you don't agree with me, please don't bother replying to/flaming me, because I will never be convinced otherwise.

On the other, it does have a cool rally heritage, and that is obviously a plus. I also think it balances out the big scoop asthetically.

However, I still have to make the wife happy. She's gotten by the scoop, the no leather, why we "need" 300HP, etc. Her big, big, complaint is the wing. Every time she sees some pimply faced kid with little civic driving around with lights under it, stupid looking rims, a rediculous sounding muffler, and some monster wing, I get huge grief about the STI (typical: "THATS what you are going to look like....", then put on despondent face).

With that said, it seems like a good solution would be to swap a small wing on. I don't want to pay hardly anything for it, becuase, like I said, I am ambivalent. If there was a cheap (couple hundred bucks) way to do it which looked good and was easy (I mean really easy), I would think about doing it to save my marriage.

Any thoughts or photochops on what might be done?

Due to the limited availability of the STi and the popularity of the current RS and WRX I don't think it will be difficult to find someone to trade with. Yes I know that it will have to be a trade from an 04 model. I think it safe to assume that there will be many of them on the road by the time you take delivery of an STi even if you are #1 at your dealer.

I'll bet that an e-bay offer to swap will yield results immediately.

The reason you can't just swap wings with a WRX is because the STi wing uses extra mounting holes that wouldn't be covered by the WRX wing.

You could swap trunks, but that would kill resale value. If I were to do this, I would just buy a painted WRX trunk and save the STi trunk with spoiler in case I sell it years from now.

My suggestion lets you take the top part of the wing off when you don't want to use it, and put it back on if you are taking it to the track. I'm suggesting a small maybe 1/4 inch thick piece that would just "cap" off the area that would be uncovered by removing the top part of the wing. It wouldn't extend past the edges of the vertical piece there.

I don't have photoshop, but I'll try to come up with something.

rob, just to let you know, I examined the pictures of the STi at the auto shows and I don't think the wing is two pieces. If you can find a pic of the US STI with a two piece wing I'd love to see it. Let me know if you have seen anything.

It looked like a two piece to me, in person.

check out these pics.

In this last one, you can almost make out some sort of mounting hardware underneath?

Look at this pic, http://www.imprezawrxsti.com/postnuke/modules.php?set_albumName=album02&id=nopassthru&op =modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_phot o.php

it shows the holes of the original STI wing. Picture is from www.imprezawrxsti.com/postnuke. The only way to swap the wing is to change the trunk lid.

Btw, I don't like the wing but I'm on the list to get a STi, I will decide what to do with the wing after having the car. My brother said if it was not AWD, a G35c was way better in term of quality but anyway. I haven't sit in the STi but he compared the STi as "A outstanding performance car with a Hyundai Accent plastic interior and "poor" Recaro seats"... I haven't sit in one so I can only relate what he thinks of it but anyway, I don't care.

Yeah, I'm actually talking about just taking the top half of the wing off, at the visible horizontal line, and putting 2 "covers" on where the top part of the wing used to meet the bottom part. This would leave the bottom part of the wing attached to the trunk.

ps...the interior is nearly identical to the WRX interior, except colors. If you like that, you're in. It's much better than he says. And, I love the seats too.

I bet someone will make a wing that looks just like that only shorter, that you could mount to the existing "wing post". Can somone photochop a wing that is about that size in height? I remember seeing a b4 in japan w/a wing similar in style only shorter and it looked awesome.

Funny, I was just worlking on a photochop of this very idea 2 nights ago. I must admit, it was looking pretty ugly, not the job I was doing, just the finished wing. But, I will post it later tonight anyway.

If there isn't already I'm sure there'll soon be third party companies out there selling bolt on wings for the STI that are less obtrusive..

..put the original one in storage and bring it out when it comes time to sell your STI to "Future Rex Owner", assuming he manages to cajole his parents into buying it for him.

Wait, so you want "horns" at the back of your car? If you are talking about killing re-sale value, make sure this is a reversable mod!

I wouldn't do it if it wasn't reversible. I'm assuming that the top segment of the wing can be reversibly removed from the bottom segment. Otherwise, I'm at the mercy of the aftermarket...generally not good if you're looking for a _smaller_ wing.

I may start pricing painted trunks.

I particularly like the idea that instead of just having the two covered stumps, you get a wing that spans the two "winglets" but doesn't rise nearly as much as the stock wing. Allows you to keep the trunk in OEM condition, and gives you a WRC spoiler look, but its definately not as high.

Hey, you could always wait till 2005 when the Spec C will probably be released without a wing.
