Default OT: bad accident in surrey, 4 deaths

4 people die in car accident

Four young men killed in car crash
Lone survivor, 16, in critical condition

canada.com

Wednesday, March 26, 2003

A fiery car crash in Surrey Tuesday night has claimed the lives of four young men.

A Mustang speeding along 168th Street lost control and crashed head-on into a Pontiac Firebird.

The force of the collision tore the Mustang in half, throwing all four occupants out of the vehicle. The Firebird burst into flames and the driver, 24-year-old Bryce Nordquist, was killed.

Three of the four youths in the Mustang were thrown from the car and died from their injuries. Craig Bailey and Owen Snashell, 17, and Brandon Gallo, 16, died.

The lone survivor, 16-year-old Scott Keeley, is at B.C. Children's Hospital in critical condition.

That stretch of 168th, known locally as "the flats," is notorious for speeding.

It's not yet known whether the occupants of the Mustang were wearing seat belts, but three of them were ejected from the car in the crash and thrown as far as 30 metres away.

RCMP say the Mustang was trying to pass another car when it hit the Firebird.

Some of the victims went to school at Lord Tweedsmuir secondary school in Surrey.

RCMP officers and counsellors are on hand there Wednesday to help students and staff deal with the tragedy.

Are they allowed to release the names of minors?

With the permission of the next of kin, I believe so.

I did hear names today on the radio.

Unhappy

Oh, and to bring it a little closer to home, those kids would have been in grade 8 when I taught back at Tweedsmuir a couple years ago.

4 People did die, I think its a typo for the title. Horrible tragedy, just so sad to see such youth wasted away.

firebird burst into flames..... thats kinda ironic... in a sick sorta way.

Strange how they didnt even hint at .... Street Racing may have been a factor in a case with teenagers, and speeding and a performance car crashing. Welll hopefully that flavor of the month is finally over. RIP to the firebird driver and the ppl who were wearing seatbelts but died.

You never know though. I didn't see mention of it but maybe out of respect to the families they are not bad mouthing the kids yet.
We'll see how the media starts reporting it as more facts are learned.

On last nites news, the surrey RCMP officer said that the 4 youths in the Mustang were passing another car at a high rate of speed when they crashed into the Firebird. A head-on collision.

actually, on the contrary, the media even emphasized this time that it was NOT a street racing incident.
i'm glad that they finally figured out that you can't street race in one lane or if the other person is coming the other way.
