Question Difficulty of replacing synchros?

My 2nd gear tends to be harder to shift into than the others, and is quite happy to grind if hurried. Under light shifting pressure, it can take as long as a couple of seconds before it wants to go in. Rev-matching seems to help. So I'm thinking the previous owner (~70k on the odo.) wore down the synchros some.

I've never busted a transmission open before, but I am mechanically inclined and, I have a good history of things working better after I take them apart and put them back together. Additionally, I accept that I may wind up shelling out big bucks if I have to drag my tail over to a professional to bail me out. Since I'm going to be taking a lot of things apart on the car soon anyway, this would be the sensible time to consider doing the transmission as well.

My question: How difficult is it to replace synchros? Are synchros themselves expensive? Anybody have personal stories to share (horror or otherwise), or things to watch out for?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have a shop or garage to work on this?

I'm not sure if you have to pull the entire trans out....or if you can work on it in the car.

I'm sure it would be MUCH easier to work on it, on a tranny stand.

Also....I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you have a good set of manuals to show you what parts go where and such incase you forget.

Do no attempt to do this unless you have the install manuals, gear pullers, a Press to set the gearset back in the case, and other tools as well. This is definitely something someone should do unless they have a shop, tools, and the know how. Your best bet is to find someone local that has all of those things to do the work or help you do the work. Try you local Subaru dealership as most of the good ones have tranny techs. Good Luck.

Great question.
Yes, you need the trans out of the car and almost fully disassembled to do syncros. They are part of each forward gear, thus you need to split the case, remove the shafts, remove the gears, remove the syncros and then reassemble everything.
The parts are not very expensive, it is the labor to do the work. While at it, you may want to replace a couple of gears and anything else that is wearing out.
I would suggest you either get a knowledgable friend to help (with all tools required as well as manuals) or work out a deal with a dealer. Possibly you remove the trans and take it to them and you do the reinstall.

Before you go and do that, try swapping to Redline superlight shockproof gear oil or some other tranny friendly oil.....

Default rebuild trans

the trans has to be removed, rear half of trans has to be removed, the front gear section case has to be split, remove shafts, a special tool is needed to seperate inner pinion shaft from outershaft then gears are pressed off of outer shift. outer shaft has 2 keys in it, press one gear off at a time. use a thin rod with some kind of base on it to stack the part on as you remove them to ensure correct part orientation. reassemble with needed new parts, most dealers have syncro's in stock. gears may have to be ordered. reinstill shafts front bearings on drive & pinion shafts are pinned make sure they are seated correctly or case and bearing will be danaged. reattach rear half and install in car fill with 75/90 synthic. a manual is needed for small detail and torque spec's. it's not a hard jod to do, but special tool are needed

Since were talking about synchros and I may have a bad 2nd gear synchro....Here's a question: Are synchro's covered under the 5yr 60,000 mile factory powertrain warranty?

Default sounds similar to my story

I had this exact same question running in my head but I didnt react before it went BOOM.
Now the second gear exploded all over and messed up the entire tranny(or so Subaru says)
I'm working on getting a RA tranny instead of shelling out the 5G Subaru wants for getting my car back (new tranny, clutch, flywheel, and the dreadful costly labor)
