Default Error code 420?

No, this isn't a joke about pot.

This is the code I got from my check engine light. Something about manifold pressure. anyone have a clue? 97 1.8 liter in a Brighton.

I'm thinking it has something to do with the exhaust manifold, and whatever recovery system it uses. I get some smoke rolling from way below if I keep the revs up high for a while. Also, there might be some oil being used, as this sucker has 175,000 miles.

anyone?

I've had this code a few times on my RS. Could be catalytic converter, O2 sensor or exhaust leak. Could also be fuel cap not on all the way.

As for the oil problems, that'll be easy. Chances are its the rear main seal or oil pump seal. Usually happens on the 1.8L before 200k. A little labor intensive, but once its fixed, you should not have to worry about them again.

I bought the car in Florida actually, and drove it back home like this. Had the Subaru dealer in Tallahassee tell me the same thing. I started to think the smoke had something to do with the error code. Truthfully, I haven't got off my arse, and looked deeper.

So your verdict is the main seal? It gets smoke rolling from below, I cannot see where from. It's at back of the engine bay, and comes from below, sometimes even looks like it's coming from the tranny.

If that's the rear main, I hear I have to pull the engine. If I pull a 1.8, you can be damn sure a 1.8 isn't going back in.

Yeah, I'm sorry. 420 is such a great reason to smoke pot, and is so funny, and original. It's what is going to make pot legal. Anyone who has any serious views on pot not being so terrible, they all get high at 4:20, because that's what all the cool kids have hammered into there head. Real good idea.

If you want to get high, get high. If not, don't. It's not a big deal, only been around for 50 years in a major roll. With so many people rising up to the challenge at 4:20 (right after high school kids get out), I'm shocked it's not legal today. X9999

Can I be more BLUNT about it being a stupid idea? Smoke pot or not, I don't care. I smoke about every 6 months, if it hits me as a good time. Now that I think about it, I haven't smoked in over a year. It's not something I jack off to at just after 4, because I think it's the greatest thing ever. Those who do live for 420, really hamper the effort of everyone else, who just wants the government to chill, and let everyone do what they wish.

Aside from all this, can I drive to Atlanta this weekend, and feel safe in my 1.8? Today it just started stumbling in low RPM's. What's up with code 420? Seems it might have a number of issues.

P0420 Catalyst system efficiency below threshold

It may be time to replace the cat. I _think_ that emissions parts on cars are supposed to be replaced by dealer if they fail within 7 years of being purchased (brand new). Couldn't hurt to try, especially if you want to pass emissions next time.
