Question Can I tap into the taillights to power a neon light in my trunk??

Hi,

I am looking for the best place to tap the positive side of a neon light in my trunk. I was thinking about the taillights, but I am not sure if that would dim the taillights? If I can tap into those without a problem what color wire do I tap into. I have a 95 Impreza.

Any info would be helpful

Thanks

Tom

To the best of my knoledge...
You wouln't hve any problems using any of the 12+ wires in the tail lights, BUT they are all switched... Tail lights, blinkers, & reverse lights... (don't quote me on the reverse lights npositive or negitive switching)
If you want the neon on with the tail lights it shoud be fine; otherwise, you'll have to find a constant power
I don't know if there is a constant power back there (if that is what you want) such as a power outlet or trunk light. The other option is tap a fuse in the fuse box, add a switch some where, & run a seperate wire for the light.

Do you know what the current draw of the light is? Somewhere on the unit or in the documentation it should say how many watts or amps or milliamps it draws.

It probably doesn't draw too much, but just check; I wouldn't put more than 5 or 10 watts of extra load constantly on that circuit.

As for finding out which wire to tap, I'd suggest taking a test light and probing each of them (you can disconnect the connector and probe its pins). It should only take you a few minutes. Test lights are very useful; if you don't have one, pick one up from an auto parts store for a buck or two.

i did this in my last car and i used the positive lead for the trunk light. If you don't have one, buy the switch from your dealer and hook the neon up to the pre-existing harness for the trunk light.

Cool thanks man,

That sounds better than hooking it up to my tailights. This way it won't be on all the time.

Damn.. he beat me to it. I have two cold cathodes mounted under my amp rack that are wired this way. Works like a charm: open the hatch, cathodes light up.. close the hatch, they shut off.
