Post Mileage experiment

I am going to tinker with my baby. I am going to do mods to my car to increase mileage. As of now it is stock, even the tire pressure is stock, 31 front 29 rear psi. I will try to do a tank by tank comparison. Today i put 13.5 u.s. gallons in and checked my trip meter. the magic number was 396.3 miles.Yes, 29+ mpg. that kicked butt. that is highway mostly. driving all week under 3000 rpm's was boring but thats the price i'm willing to pay.
For my next trick I will increase all tire pressure to 35 as recommended by my "I" club specialists and see how and if that helps.
I'll keep you posted.
p.s. future tests will be:
1. plugs/wires I may try several brands of plugs though magnecor will be the wires
2. some brand of ignition.
3. possibly an intake
4. possibly Borla headers & cat back
this is all a clever plot to get the wife to agree to "spend a little now to save alot later". wish me luck.
any suggestions are appreciated.
thanks

Thumbs up

I run 36F/32R all the time. Not that I do any wicked driving on the street, but it's nice for the occasional mountain road up here. I noticed a small gain in mileage when I switched over to a K&N and took out the resonator. More when I added the underdrive pulley, and even more with the cat-back and intake. Depending how I drive I can get up to around 33 or so on the highway with the cruise set around 70. Most of the time it's around 30, but depending on the tank it can go higher. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

You'll have to be careful how you interpret your findings. Unless you were to drive the same routes, same speed, same shift patterns, etc. while changing one parameter at a time, it will be somewhat difficult to conclude that changing each one of those variable (eg-tire pressure) had any effect at all.

Jz you've made a good point.
My route is the same every day. I shift very similarly every time, eccellerating smoothly to 3k rpm before each shift, not nailing it. i'm glad there is some interest here.

When you're fully broken in, don't forget to switch to synthetic oil. I've used Mobil 1 in 5 different cars I've owned and it has always returned 8-12% mileage increases.

Wona cheap GOOD mod that will surely work well?

Throw out crappy CHAMPIONS spark plugs and get NGK or Denso.
