What does the resonator part of the exhaust system do ....

It allows sound waves from the exhaust to resonate in an enclosed chamber so that it is not as loud when it exits the vehicle.

When I had the exhaust replaced on my Civic years ago, I pulled the resonator out at the same time.

That lasted about 3 weeks.

I had a new one welded in after a few blasts on the highway.

I am confident that the noise and vibration without it has had lasting effects on my hearing.
