Default STi vs. EVO - Automobile Magazine in Santa Clarita

I was just on a midday canyon run on San Francisquito Canyon Road north of Santa Clarita and noticed a blur of what I thought at the moment was a couple of Subarus sitting on the side of the road for another run of their own. I was going fairly fast and only noticed the nice wheels on the blue one. I nail the brakes and stop and back up to them. Low and behold it is the new STi. I am admiring the Sti and after about a minute take it upon myself to check out the other Subaru. Wait a minute, this was no Suby, it was the EVO VIII. How lucky. I ask them who they were with and they said Automobile Magazine. They were on a photo shoot. I didn't really want to be a pest because they looked pretty busy but I asked which one was faster and without hesitation they both pointed at the STi. I asked which one handled better, and got the standard they both handle good in their own ways reply I've read before. He did mention that the STi is much better on the street, whatever that means. I was kind of in the way, and the road was pretty busy, so I took off after a few minutes, but I thought some people around here might be interested to know there is an STi and EVO driving somewhere around the Santa Clarita vicinity today. Glad I picked that road.

I'm very happy to hear the good news about the power. I hope they mean a slightly more compliant ride when they said the STi handles better on the street. Oh man, oh man, oh man ... The more I hear the more I like. The more fuel for my impatience. Arggggggg. Muuuuust mainnnnntain connnnntrol. Arggggggg, impossible.

I expect the stock STI to be faster than the stock EVO (particularly on 91 octane) and the comment concerning "much better on the street" is not news is it? I believe Paul Hansen and others have mentioned the UK and Japan STI's have always been a better "street" ride for daily driving and such while maintaining excellent track characteristics.

At least SOA is giving the media access to the STI. I'm still skeptical as to why Mitsubishi limited pre-release testing and may have provided a ringer for review. I do believe that Sports Compact Car Magazine was the wrong publication to hand a ringer to without telling them. If true SCC will likely shove it up MMC's exhaust pipe.

This is great news. Hopefully we'll see something posted on the web soon with in-depth driving impressions of the 2.5 liter.

Don't hold your breathe I just drove the new STi, back to back with an EVO. There is a press embargo until May 1. This means that magazine journos can't say anything interesting about the car until May 1st. Yeah, I was asked to keep my lips zipped

I did post a little blurp on our forum at http://www.vishnutuning.com/bb/forum...p?s=&forumid=9

Nothing too interesting so don't get too excited

Cheers,
Shiv

Whatever! You realize that by putting a "gag order" on info vs the two cars that SOA either:

1. expects people to leak juicy tidbits to add to the hype re: the STi's release. Remember, this is about selling cars.
2. is worried that the STi won't fare well, and they want to limit exposure for as long as possible to prevent minimizing the "hype." Remember, this is about selling cars.

You can hardly blame them for trying to max their "hype" to coinside with the releas of their vehicle. I'm sure they want all the press reviews to be fresh on the minds of their potential buyers when the STi hits the pavement in the USA. It makes perfect sense from a marketing point of view. Form a information whore's and definate future buyer's point of view, this sucks the big gigantic fly ridden dog dodo. I'm with you, give up the info already. HEY SUBARU YOU ALREADY HAVE MY BUSINESS, GIVE ME THE INFO, YOU BASTARDS.

Shiv's comments on his site make it sound like the STi is faster, but the Evo handles better. It certainly doesn't read like he is in awe of the STi the way he and others seemed to be of the Evo when they first drove it...

gsx,

I would tend to agree with you here. Shiv sounded a little unimpressed. Maybe part of that was because these car are both monsters, but have 2 different ways of going about the same goal. I think subaru's and mitsubishi's ideas of handling are different. The Evo is probably more like the go kart everyone desribes it as. However, I think in the long run. The Sti suspension is better and less rough. I think it has a "streetable" give to it. And works much better on uneven surfaces. I think the STi is obviously faster. But how much faster is a good question. Either way I have descided on the STi. I think it is better built and I doubt I will ever be able to drive past the limits of that car.

I sorta decided on the STi too, but I have (briefly) driven the Evo and it felt awesome- I really would love to drive a car that feels like that every day. I just hope the STi is more similar than different, 'cause the Evo felt soooo good! It does concern me that Shiv-the Subie Tuner- seemed so indifferent to the STi, though...

I don't get the feeling that he was unimpressed, but I guess we will know in a month. If you read his other article on the Vishnu Edition WRX, it does say that his was the fastest at the dragstrip with a 12.7x at 110 mph, so we know that the STi will be "slower" than that. I think he is saying that the VE WRX was the shortest in braking at 110' 60-0, but that is not as clear. Also maybe the other figures given would be good predictors of the STi, with my guess (hope?) that the STi would be a few ticks behind in most categories, which I would say would be pretty awesome for a stock car on street tires...

I agree with what has been said about the way the STI handles in comparison to the EVO. I do believe the STi will be faster in a straight line. The Evo has always been a faster track car than the STi. Anyone who has read the european articles in Car magazine and EVO as well as many others know that the EVO has always been the more "manic" of the two cars, ultimately faster, yet less street friendly. I think this theme has and will continued with the breech only becoming closer in that the STi now boasts 2.5 liters of displacement. I think its going to boil down to what you are looking for. The STi will probably still remain the favorite for most drivers on the road, as well as car magazine editors. The car's at the limit handling will still be inspiring and quite out of reach for "most" drivers. Those that think the STi will be alot better will be speaking objectively. I think the margin will be closer than we all think. As for my opinions, I still will hold on to my 6th spot. Displacement, Subaru knowledge of AWD and familiarity will keep me closer to the STI. We are living in great time for performance cars.. may the car battles continue.

Lightbulb Speculation with specs comparison

[url=http://www.car-videos.com/performance/view.asp?ID1=169&ID2=238[/URL]

With only the "spec speculation" here is a comparo with a 91 SVT Cobra. The cars can be changed to whatever comparison only based on numbers, but what the heck!

Gag orders are incredibly normal in the industry - it happens all the time. I imagine that this gag order is in place because Subaru/STi wants to start advertising at the same date, or announce to the public the full details of pricing/weight/etc. by that date.

Having a back-to-back comparo with no information on pricing/performance would probably be pointless. And Subaru hasn't officially released that information yet. But because of this gag order date, we now know when they are planning to go public.

Cheers,

Paul Hansen
