Default MAF or fuel problems?

My car has a problem that only seems to happen in 1st gear at WOT, but has started to happen at partial throttle, still only in 1st gear. It starts cutting out, as if the fuel was cutting off intermittently. I was thinking this culd be the MAF going bad, but there is no CEL. Another thought is that the fuel system may be dirty. Any thoughts?

no idea if its even the same thing, but.....

mine did that occasionally, except not even just in 1st... sometimes while cruising at the same speed, such as on the highway, I would feel the RPMs drop, and then recover without me moving the pedal. also, no CEL code

I checked out a bunch of stuff, to no avail, then I pulled the spark plugs and they were pretty eroded down, i.e. huge gap. I also had a split wire inside boot on the number one terminal,

I was surprised that this didn't give a code, but anyway I changed plugs and wires (Beck/Arnley blue match and NGK's) and it seems to have fixed the problem...

Actually the problem ended up being a bad intake design of my own doing. The MAF wire has been hitting a valve in the engine compartment when the engine is under heavy load, after a while the insulation of the wire has stripped off so that when the MAF wire hits, the wire shorts. I put it back to stock for now until I can figure out another intake option. BTW, after all that abuse, the MAF is still fine.

Wow.. surprised that the MAF survived after all that punishment. I guess those new MAF's were finally built to last
