Default Soul Calibur 2 graphical comparison (PS2 v. GC v. Xbox)

Saw these screenshots online, and thought the results were interesting. I'm linking to the shots, as they're slow to load, but they're worth checking out.

GameCube:
http://www.felixmcli.org/sc2-gc-c1.JPG

PS2:
http://www.felixmcli.org/sc2-ps2-c1.JPG

Xbox:
http://www.felixmcli.org/sc2-xb720-2.JPG

The reason the Xbox shot looks SO much better is because it is the only one that supports 780p. Apparently it looks a little bit better than the other two versions when running at the same 480p resolution as the other two platforms (better aliasing), but the differences will be much less noticeable unless you've got a helluva TV.

-tim

p.s. These screens show the special characters for each platform.

It looks like they took the Xbox shot using a camera in front of the tv... look at all the rainbows. maybe that's why the anti-aliasing seems better... it's already "anti-aliased" by the tv.

Yeah, it does look like they just used a digi cam, but it's difficult to capture 780p images directly to a PC, so that makes sense. Anyway, if anything I'd think that using the digi cam to take a pic would make things look worse, rather than better.

Regarding the Xbox having better ailiasing, I was just going from what the guy who took the pics said. You can read his full impressions here:

The Xbox graphics seem better by far. I have an HD 47" with the component cables for the Xbox. It really is something to see. It looks like this game takes advantage of that capability very nicely. To be fair, I also really like the graphics of the GC. It's elemental effects seem more natural than those on the Xbox and look awesome, too.

edit: i just noticed the computer nipples! Wow, HD DOES have its advantages

From what this guy had to say, Link is also the best of the "special" characters in the game. That seems natural, since he has a blend of melee and long-range attacks.

With no ranged attacks, Heihachi is way out of his element.

Are those characters really in the game?

Yep, but only one per platform. Link on the GC, Heihachi on the PS2, and Spawn on the Xbox.

The Xbox's hardware is much better then the GC or PS2, just like the GC is also better then the PS2, though lower res then the Xbox.

I still haven't had any desire to buy a Xbox though. There are some good games but almost all of them are games I could rent and beat. Plus I despise the controller (its bulkier then my old Dreamcast controller), and the system itself is HUGE.

My Gamecube rules me. Great controller, great titles, and nice and small to carry places easily.

You should try out the S controller, which is standard issue on all Xboxes. It's hardly any bigger than the PS2's controller.

Personally, I hate the GC controller. It's far too small for my hands, and the triggers are too imprecise. Just goes to show you can't please everybody

Hmm that does look better then the normal Xbox controller, I hated how they had those little 2 buttons above the main 4 that were so close together I'd always hit them both at the same time.

I have huge hands though and I still love the GC controller. Plus Zelda and Metroid own me.

The S-controller is nicer, but i still have problems with the buttons on the xbox controller. I don't have time to look down and see the colors of the buttons i am pressing, so a difference in shape or texture would go a long way towards making it a better controller, IMO. I have large hands as well and I love the GC controller. It fits in my hand nicely and I never have to look at the controller to get to the button I need as a result I am not pressing the button to "switch camera" when what I wanted was to apply the handbrake. AIEEEE!

There are only four same-size buttons laid out in a diamond... just like on the PS2 controller... can't be that hard to tell them apart just by their position

Those two smaller buttons that are below on the S controller or above on the regular controller I believe is what he's refering to. They're all circles, and on the regular controller when I play Halo I always found myself like turning on a flashlight instead of doing something else.

Yes... but there's only two... and one's on the left and the other's on the right on the S controller. I did have the same problem on the original controller, though, until I realized that the lighter button was on top, and I used a mnemonic comparing the white button to the sun and the dark button to the earth to remember that. Then it was all good

Sorry, Tim, I am not as gifted of a gamer as you to be combining mnemonics, hand-eye coordination and gameplay

Also, even though the buttons are in a diamond shape they are close together and I still get confused. It may be my small brain or fat thumbs, I don't know, but when I press the wrong button it is very annoying. It could use some work, is all I am saying and that the GC controller (wavebird, specifically) is the best of the bunch, IMO.

Yeah, I realized when I clicked the "Submit Reply" button that was going to sound kinda odd...

I love my wavebird, and wish every console had a 1st party wireless controller, but the ergonomics of the controller just don't do it for me. Give me a proper 2nd analog joystick and some triggers with proper feel, and we'll talk
