Default where is first gear in japan?

this might be a dumb question, but its been on my mind for some time.

Since some of you have been to japan, maybe u can answer my question as to which direction they shift gears?
for us our first gear is on the upper left, towards us.
is it the same in japan or do they shift towards them? which would be 1st gear is on the right..

hmm
thanks.

Yup, the only thing that messed me up was the turn signals.
I kept turning on my wiper.

Hmm I've only seen RHD Japanese cars with reversed light/wiper stalks though, the RHD European cars I've seen have the same configuration as North America.

It'd probably depend on the manufacturer if they wanted to swap it, wouldn't take very long to switch the wiring anyway.
