Thumbs up STi Launch...new article from Wards Autoworld

Not any new information, but a good article nonetheless...

If you've checked out Subaru's website, you may have noticed that Lance Armstrong is Subaru's new spokesperson (along with the new slogan). I already assumed Subaru would debut their new advertisement campaign with the facelifted Impreza and STi, but this confirms it and provides a good summary of the STi and verifies the May 1 media embargo.

From the article:

"The car hits U.S. streets in late May, likely priced in the low-$30,000 range. Volumes will be kept intentionally low below 5,000 units annually, Adcock says."

Interesting. My dealer said end of June.

Doesnt it take longer for the cars to work their way over to the east coast usually?

The east coast got the 2004 WRXs before the west coast did (not sure if the west coast even got theirs yet).

Default good snag

Good catch.

I take it Laguna is going to be where they do a photo shoot with Lance and the Sti? (Laguna is where I grew up) That'd be cool to see. I like the 0-60 in 4.8 sec. thing....looks very close to being official.

Patiently waiting...(been waiting for 2.5 yrs for the Sti),

4.8 seconds actually means the car could do it in 4.5-4.6 seconds. Remember when Subaru said the WRX would do 0-60 in 5.9 seconds when it first came out, then as more mags came out with time they started lowering their 0-60 times in their adds to 5.4 seconds? Manufactures are usually pretty conservative with their times. It looks better to have a magazine do it faster than slower than the manufacuters times. Not that 4.8 is any slouch either.

Mitsubishi wasn't conservative with their times and their website changed the quote from "0-60 in well under 5 seconds" to "0-60 in under 5 seconds" to "0-60 in 5 seconds" as the tests came out.

I think Suburu's first quoted 0-60 figure for the WRX was 6.2 seconds. That's even more encouraging...

I too am excited about the 4.8 second figure. HOWEVER, I really wouldn't expect it to be much faster than that. There are huge differences in times; for example
Car Magazine "A" says the Sti goes 0-60 in 4.8 seconds
Car Magazine "B" says the car goes 0-60 in 4.5 seconds.

OK, that is a difference of only .3 seconds yet it is huge when in the sub 5 second range.

When the WRX came out there were many figures..6.2, 5.9, 5.6 etc.. If we talk about a .3 or even .5 second difference in a car that is over 5 seconds, that really is not too much of a deal. However, when talking performance of cars with that have sub-5 sec time...you are in a totally different league and a .3 second difference is huge.

Stop and think about the Grp. B Ford RS 200 that were road cars..AWD, 600HP= 0-60 in 3.8!!! That's rather fast!
Unfortunately only a few of those made it to the States as a track car. (sorry for the tangent)

Patiently waiting,

Davis

Actually only the RS200 Evolution (2.1) had > 600 BHP.
The road/rally spec cars were sold with 250BHP.

Yep, you'd think that but even with sub 5s cars you'll still see rather large differences between quoted figures.

Just check out all the reviews of previosuly released JDM Spec Evo's and STi's. The figures are all over the show.

Perhaps Subaru's 4.8s is the most accurate in terms of consistantly attainable for a competant driver, but that won't stop a car mag going out there doing a clutch drop and reporting 4.5s in it's review.

Also how does Subaru get their 0-60 figure? Do they run the quarter mile all day and average out the results? I seem to recall the figure quoted for the WRX included one passenger as well didn't it?

you can check out this website-
http://www.car-videos.com/performanc...?id1=169&id2=0

there's some interesting info on horsepower, torque,etc...

none of the info. on the STi is official, but they speculate times around 4.6 sec.!! And they actually use some science to back it up, so at least there's some reasoming behind it. A cool thing about the site is you can compare the STi's (speculative) performance against lots of other cars and see how many you'll blow away!
