Default Rattle/buzz/resonance at 1400/2800 rpm from engine compartment (motor mount, exhaust)

I recently had this problem fixed by the dealer, but its probably easy enough that anyone could do it. I would have done it myself if I had diagnosed the cause correctly, but it only cost an hour labor anyway. Hopefully the subject should be searchable enough (I didn't find anything when researching the problem on the site).

Problem: loud buzzing rattle from lower front end at steady or closed throttle at 2800 rpm, and open throttle at 1400 rpm. Started happening at 32k miles on my '01 2.5rs. I checked the exhaust and fittings and anything else that might be causing it, and thought I might have a bad engine mount. Took it to the dealer for a quick diagnosis because the car had 35k miles on it and I wanted to get it covered under warranty if possible.

Solution: tighten loose heat shielding on the Y-pipe (header). It seemed fairly tight when I examined it and tapped it with a wrench, but the dealer said it was loose and sure enough, the problem went away after they tightened the clamps that hold the shielding on. Took them an hour.

I have had this a couple times. The heat shields get loose, or get rocks trapped between the shields and... whatever they are shielding.

Fixed it, comes back eventually. Really annoying. Car seems to feel so much tighter when it's quiet.

Steve.
