ok the '98 the headgasket is a metal/rubber gasket... it blows pretty easily.. they now make a 4pc/layer metal gasket, sorry I do not know what kind of metal it is...

Default Head Gasket Composition

Most head gaskets are made of that pure blue rubber with steel core laminate inner. The good head gaskets are copper, and reusable. A lot of people also like graphite head gaskets, but copper is the best. The downside to this is that the copper gaskets cost around 5x the regular price of the cheapest gasket. This is a job you only want to do once, so, I recommend you go with piece of mind and go with a high quality gasket. I understand that everyone's pockets aren't deep, so, do what you can afford. I haven't had to deal with any Head Gaskets, nor do I want to, so I'm sure what types are available for the Subaru I-RS. Hope this helps.

Found this website about a 1998 Subaru I-RS-T with a blown Head Gasket.

ok, see the bottom left how the rubber has dissapeared? this is what mine looked like after I blew my headgasket... this is why so many '98 owners blow the stock gaskets, because subaru used cheap quality parts...
