Default What does ping and knock sound like?

I was driving this past week on a long roadtrip out east and back and on the way back from the east coast i noticed my car would make this funny noise.

While i was driving at freewya speeds from 50-80 mph whenever i lifted my foot off the throttle, i would hear the chirping sound that i normally expect from the WRX exhaust and custom midpipe i had installed. However now i noticed a snapping/rattling sound that would only occur when i lifted my foot off the gas. I could stop this sound early by pressing my foot back on the gas. It would start off fast then gradually tail off after a few seconds, but it was noticably loud and almost sounded as if something on the underbody of the car was snapping to pieces and i could feel the force of the sound in the gas pedal. However i dont think anythying is actually falling apart.

I'm wondering if its related to engine knock/ping at all, because I was wondering if i was hearing some misfiring in the exhaust manifold. I usually run regular octane gas, but for a change i ran premium 91 octane for nearly a full tank and the frequency of these sounds was significantly reduced but not altogether gone. When I filled my next tank with regular gas, the sounds came b ack again with the same 'lift-off-throttle' pattern. So far my engine seems to be running ok at constant cruise and accelration and other than the weird sound, i can't tell if this is anything serious. But its a new sound and its concerning me. Plus i haven't seen a CEL again, but i'm not sure if that could pop up at any time.

Just wondering if anyone knows what this may be. Thanks

Ed

I had rod knock before, my con rod spun a bearing and trust me, you know something is really wrong (clacl clack clack) all the time which correlate to the rpm's (obviously). I had detonation before (due to nitrous) too and the car wouldnt climb past 5000 rpm at WOT and made a funny noise, like escaping gas and engine noise mixed together (and the engine sounded liek it was really straining), the my engine went to crap after I took my foot off the gas just a second too late.

I know a subaru tech when I told him my car was making a noise similar to what you describe, he told me it is normally the tensioner, these cars are known for that.Try taking it to subaru and have them check it out.

To further explain what he just said, read my old thread. It's very interesting.

If it was pinging, you'd hear it under full throttle, not when backing off the gas. It sounds a bit like very small ball bearings inside a cast iron box being rattled around.....or like sleet on a skylight.

Ed if you want to hear what pinging sounds like I'll take you for a ride in my truck. I would need to put 87 oct. and put a load on it, but you will diffently learn how pinging sounds.
