Default Air filter affects mileage?

Hi!

After installing a K&N cone filter and a heat shield to form an improvized CAI, I have a feeling that the mileage has gone down quite a bit - I get 16-18 mpg.

Can air filter (better air flow) actually affect mileage even if I try to drive economicaly? Or is it just the fun factor?

In any case, is there anything one can do to improve mileage (I'm reading people are getting 22-25 with EJ25 - why would my EJ20 NA take so much more)?

D.

I 'heard' that you can have better gas milage w/ an aftermarket intake if you drive nicely....shift before 4K.

..but if you drive at WOT, you will get much worse gas milage than stock.

do some gas milage experiments w/ different intake setups and driving styles....post your results.

I dont agree with maciek. If the engine management has had time to learn the filter normal driving should be equal or better assuming the new filter flows better.

At WOT it could increase the amount of Air in relation to the amount of fuel, and since most of our cars run rich it could increase the milage, though I doubt any of us monitor WOT gas mileage

edit: changed "I dont with maciek"

Yes, I did and I do have this setup for almost almost a year now (except the heatshield, which was added later).
